St Mary's Church in Legnica

St. Mary's Church in Legnica (pronounced "leg-NEE-tsah") is the oldest surviving church in this Lower Silesian city and one of the oldest in all of Silesia. Its story begins in the 12th century, and according to the medieval chronicler Jan Długosz, Duke Henry the Pious prayed here before the Battle of Legnica against the Mongols in 1241. Today it is a Lutheran church with twin spires, striking patterned pillars and, in summer, a tower you can climb for views over the Old Town.

Where it is and how to get there

Legnica lies in southwestern Poland, about 70 km west of Wrocław along the A4 motorway — roughly an hour by car or train. Wrocław Airport is the closest international airport. The church stands in the heart of the Old Town, a few minutes' walk from the Market Square, the Catholic cathedral and the Piast Castle; the train station is about 15 minutes away on foot. If you drive, use one of the paid parking lots in the downtown zone.

A short history

Around 1170 Duke Bolesław the Tall built a small, probably wooden church near his castle; it was replaced in 1192 by a Romanesque stone building. A town fire destroyed it in 1338, and it was rebuilt between 1362 and 1386, then remodeled as a basilica in the 15th century.

St. Mary's became Legnica's first Protestant church after Duke Frederick II introduced Lutheranism in 1524 — a reminder that this region was part of the German-speaking, largely Protestant world for centuries before it became Polish in 1945. The church served as a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars, burned after a lightning strike in 1822, and was rebuilt in 1824–1829 with the twin west towers you see today. A thorough renovation in 1903–1906 created the present interior. It survived World War II and the fires that devastated the Old Town in 1945, and it still serves the Evangelical-Augsburg (Lutheran) parish.

What to see inside

• Early 20th-century stained glass, including a scene of St. Hedwig of Silesia finding the body of her son Henry the Pious after the battle (1905).
• A Gothic Revival terracotta altar about 7 m tall (c. 1906), with an 18th-century Nativity painting.
• Octagonal pillars covered in colorful geometric patterns — the interior's most memorable feature.
• The Drapers' Chapel, founded by the cloth-makers' guild in the second half of the 15th century, with net vaulting.
• Renaissance tombstones (1608, 1612), a stone baptismal font and a 1914 organ used for the Legnica Organ Evenings concert series.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

According to the parish, the church and viewing tower are open May 1 to September 30: Monday–Saturday 11:00 am–6:00 pm, Sunday 2:00–6:00 pm. Outside the season, including October, visits are possible only by prior arrangement by phone or email. The suggested donation is 10 PLN for adults and 5 PLN for students; it covers the church and the tower and goes to the restoration fund.

Sunday services alternate between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm depending on the week of the month; the entrance is from ul. Biskupia. Parish phone: +48 76 854 34 40 or +48 515 684 562. Information is mainly in Polish; services have historically been held in Polish and German.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are exploring Lower Silesia or traveling between Wrocław and the German border. Allow about 30 minutes for the interior and an hour if you climb the tower. Combine it with the Piast Castle, the cathedral and the City Park with its palm house, all within a short walk.
