Krośnice, Lower Silesian
At weekends the steam locomotive Px48-1907, built in 1955 and once used on the Żuławy Narrow-Gauge Railway, puffs through the park in Krośnice. The Krośnice Narrow-Gauge Railway is one of the few working park railways in Poland. Its 750 mm track was built from scratch and opened on 25 May 2013.
The railway was an initiative of the Krośnice municipality, supported by the EU Regional Operational Programme. The construction tender was announced in April 2011. A 600 mm gauge was planned at first, but 750 mm was chosen in the end, and the rails were donated by the Lower Silesia regional government. In 2012 the WLs75 diesel locomotive was overhauled and a working Px48 steam engine was bought. The line recalls the old Wrocław light railway, which ran north of Krośnice through the landscape of the Milicz fishponds. In 2019 the trains carried 24,000 passengers.
The track forms two linked loops totalling 2,970 m, with two triangular junctions where they meet. The train runs through the palace park of the former Volmerstein residence, which now houses the municipal office. Information boards stand at the five stops, including Pałac Krośnice, Park, Stawy (Ponds), Piramida (Pyramid) and Pałac Wierzchowice. The main station, Krośnice Wąskotorowe, has a ticket office, platforms and a two-track engine shed, and its building houses a tourist information point selling tickets and souvenirs.
If you want the steam engine, come at the weekend – on weekdays a diesel pulls the train. The ride is short, so 1–2 hours is enough for the train and a walk in the park. Check the current timetable and fares with the Krośnice municipality before you travel.
