Carp Days in the Barycz Valley

The Carp Days in the Barycz Valley (Dni Karpia w Dolinie Baryczy, say: DNEE KAR-pya) are an autumn food and nature festival in western Poland, built around one of Europe's largest complexes of fish ponds. Rather than a single event, it is a season-long program of more than 100 events over 15 weekends: public fish harvests, carp dinners, cycling and kayak trips, and birdwatching walks. The 2026 edition is the 20th, and it is a rewarding way to see rural Poland and its centuries-old fish-farming tradition up close.

Where is the Barycz Valley?

The Barycz (BAH-rich) river valley lies on the border of Lower Silesia and Greater Poland, north of Wrocław. The main town, Milicz, is about 55 km (35 miles) from Wrocław – roughly an hour by car. Wrocław Airport is the most convenient gateway; from Kraków or Warsaw, allow around four hours by road. Events take place in eight municipalities – Milicz, Żmigród, Cieszków, Krośnice and Twardogóra in Lower Silesia, plus Odolanów, Przygodzice and Sośnie in Greater Poland – so you will need a car or a bike to move between villages.

Why carp?

Cistercian monks began digging ponds here in the 13th century, and the region has been farming carp for more than 800 years. The Milicz Ponds (Stawy Milickie) cover about 77 km² (30 square miles) with over 285 ponds – the largest carp ponds in Poland. In Poland, carp is the traditional Christmas Eve dish, so autumn is harvest time: ponds are drained and fish are pulled out with nets. The ponds have been a nature reserve since 1963, are protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands, and attract 276 bird species, from cranes to white-tailed eagles.

Things to do during Carp Days

The program changes every weekend, but typically includes:

• public fish harvests, often with tastings,
• carp lunches and dinners, including the popular "Ryba do syta" ("fish to your heart's content") menus,
• guided birdwatching walks, bike rides along the dikes and kayak trips,
• angling contests, craft workshops and family activities,
• forest bathing and outdoor events.

The biggest harvests usually fall in October and November, when thousands of migrating birds gather on the drained ponds.

Dates, tickets and planning

As of October 2026, the festival runs from early September to early December (the regional tourist board lists September 4 – December 5, 2026). There is no single festival pass: each event has its own address, time, price and booking rules – some are free, others require a ticket or registration. Check the official calendar, pick a weekend, and book dinners and guided trips in advance. Information is mainly in Polish, so a translation app helps. Bring binoculars and waterproof boots for the dikes.

Is it worth visiting?

If you enjoy food traditions, birdwatching or quiet countryside, yes. It is an authentic local festival rather than a tourist show – and an easy weekend trip from Wrocław. Payments are in Polish złoty (PLN); carry some cash for village events.
