Kayaking in the Barycz Valley

The Barycz Valley is flat and its rivers are calm and slow, so kayaking trips here are recommended above all to beginners. The Barycz is among the slowest rivers in Poland: its average gradient is a mere 0.035%. Besides the Barycz itself you can paddle the Sułów and Milicz mill channels.

Among the Cistercian fishponds

The Milicz Ponds, established by Cistercians from the 13th century onwards, form Poland's largest and one of Europe's largest carp farming centres: more than 285 ponds covering about 77 km² in total. A waterfowl reserve has existed here since 1963 — 276 bird species have been recorded, 166 of them breeding, including cranes, white-tailed eagles and red kites.

The Sułów mill channel route

A few-kilometre stretch of the Sułów Mill Channel ends below the Naturum hotel in Ruda Sułowska (Milicz municipality). The channel is heavily wooded, so even on hot days it is cooler on the water than in the open fields.

The Naturum base

The Naturum education and tourism centre offers a fisheries open-air museum, horse-cart photo safaris, bike rental and the Gospoda 8 Ryb inn serving local fish specialities. Carp Days take place nearby, the Colourful Carp Trail runs through the area, and across the valley await the palace in Milicz and the Christmas Ornament Museum.
