Parish Church in Rzeszów

Rzeszów's Fara, the parish church of St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus, is the oldest parish in Rzeszów (roughly "ZHEH-shoof") and one of the city's key historic sights. It stands on Farny Square, a few minutes' walk from the Market Square, in the heart of the capital of southeastern Poland's Podkarpackie region. A Gothic chancel from the 15th century, Baroque aisles and a free-standing bell tower make it an easy and rewarding stop on any walk through the old town.

Where it is and how to get there

Rzeszów is the largest city in southeastern Poland, about 170 km east of Kraków by highway. Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport lies just north of the city, and the main train station is within walking distance of the center. The church sits at 5 Farny Square (pl. Farny 5), where 3 Maja Street meets Kościuszki Street; this part of downtown is largely pedestrianized, so leave a car in one of the paid city-center lots and walk.

A short history

A wooden church stood here by 1354–1363, soon after King Casimir the Great granted Rzeszów to the knight Jan Pakosławic. After war damage and fire, the town rebuilt in brick and stone: the Gothic chancel dates from 1427 and is the oldest part of today's church. Rzeszów burned repeatedly during Tatar and other raids, and after the fire of 1621 the town's owner, Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza, had the church rebuilt and enlarged. The side aisles were added in 1754, giving the building its Baroque look. The church is a listed historic monument.

What to see inside

• The high altar of 1730, filling the whole chancel wall, with a Crucifixion painting at its center and images of the two patron saints.
• Tombs of the Rzeszowski family, the town's early owners, on the north wall of the chancel.
• A Rococo pulpit and a carved rood beam with a crucifix.
• Baroque side altars, some funded by the town's craft guilds.
• A 1952 pipe organ by the Warsaw firm of Zygmunt Kamiński with 35 stops; its predecessor was destroyed during World War II.

The free-standing Baroque bell tower, 30.5 m (100 ft) tall and square in plan, is one of the landmarks of the downtown skyline. Sources disagree on whether it dates from the 17th century or from the mid-18th-century rebuilding, so treat any single date with caution.

Visiting: opening hours and admission

This is a working parish church, not a museum: there are no tickets and admission is free, but there are no set sightseeing hours either. The best time to look inside is just before or after a service. As of October 2026 (winter schedule), the diocese lists weekday Masses at 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and Sunday Masses from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Information on site is in Polish. Allow 20–30 minutes, dress modestly and keep quiet during prayers.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are already exploring central Rzeszów. It is not a destination in its own right like Łańcut Castle, about 20 km away, but it adds real depth to a walk: the chancel and tombs tell the story of the town's medieval owners, and the tower makes a fine photo from 3 Maja Street. Nearby you can combine it with the Market Square and its town hall, the Underground Tourist Route through old merchants' cellars, the Bernardine church, and the quirky Museum of Bedtime Cartoons (Muzeum Dobranocek), which is great with kids.
