Bedtime Cartoon Museum in Rzeszów

The Bedtime Cartoon Museum in Rzeszów (Muzeum Dobranocek) is devoted to "dobranocki" – the evening cartoons that Polish children waited for before bed for decades. Its display cases on Mickiewicza Street hold original film puppets of Teddy Floppy-ear (Miś Uszatek), Colargol and Pik-Pok the penguin, alongside hundreds of objects featuring cartoon heroes. Children meet characters from the screen, while parents and grandparents revisit their own childhood.

History of the museum and the bedtime cartoon

The museum was established in 2008 at the initiative of the collector Wojciech Jama, based on objects he donated; it officially opened on 22 March 2009. Its full name is the Bedtime Cartoon Museum from the Collection of Wojciech Jama in Rzeszów.

The first Polish bedtime programme was "Jacek i Agatka", broadcast on 2 October 1962. For children the evening cartoon marked the end of the day; for parents it was the signal that it was time for bed. The last bedtime cartoon on TVP's Channel One – the British "Peppa Pig" – was shown on 30 August 2013.

What to see in the permanent exhibition

• Original puppets from Łódź's Se-Ma-For studio – the heroes of "Teddy Floppy-ear", "The Adventures of Colargol", "Little Penguin Pik-Pok", "Three Bears" and "Maurycy and Hawranek".
• A "Lazuryt" TV set turned into a display case for the glove puppets from "Jacek i Agatka", standing in the middle of the room.
• Sculptures of characters – Reksio, Colargol, Koziołek Matołek, Gucio and Cezar, and Pik-Pok the penguin.
• Memorabilia of Bolek and Lolek and of foreign bedtime cartoon heroes.
• Toys, stamps, postcards, badges and sweet wrappers featuring cartoon characters.

The museum also has a screening room where you can watch bedtime cartoons, and temporary exhibitions show, among other things, sets and scenery from animated films. Educational sessions are run for kindergartens and schools.

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday 9:00–17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00–18:00; it is closed on Mondays. A standard ticket costs PLN 16, reduced PLN 10, and admission is free for individual visitors on Tuesdays (since 1 May 2025). A guided tour costs PLN 40 per group and PLN 50 for individual visitors. A visit takes about 30–45 minutes, and with a screening you can easily spend an hour. Preschoolers and school-age children enjoy it most, but adults often have just as much fun. The museum is at ul. Mickiewicza 13 in the city centre, a few minutes' walk from the market square with its town hall and the Underground Tourist Route – both fit easily into one walk around central Rzeszów.
