Bernardine Monastery in Rzeszów

The Bernardine Monastery in Rzeszów stands in the city centre and is one of the Podkarpackie capital’s key religious monuments. The complex was founded by Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza in 1610–1629 as a church, monastery and part of the city’s defensive system. Today the church is a minor basilica and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Rzeszów.

Sanctuary and Marian figure

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary houses a late-Gothic figure of the Virgin and Child, linked to a cult that has developed in Rzeszów since the 16th century. The presbytery contains alabaster monuments to the Ligęza family, while the interior preserves furnishings from several periods. Also look at the church doors and the transept chapels.

A fortress in the city centre

The original complex had a defensive role: it was a forward element of Rzeszów’s fortifications and could shelter local residents. The Renaissance body with Baroque elements, crypt beneath the presbytery and monastic walls show that this was not only a representative building. The Bernardine Gardens stretch beside it.

Practical information

This is an active basilica, so plan an interior visit between services and check current hours on the Bernardines’ website. The complex is at 8 Sokoła Street, a few minutes’ walk from the Market Square. Allow 30–40 minutes for the church, sanctuary and gardens. Combine it with the Rzeszów Underground, the Lubomirski castle and a walk through the Old Town.
