Łańcut, Subcarpathian
The Stables and Coach House at Łańcut Castle (say "WAHN-tsoot") hold one of Europe's most remarkable collections of horse-drawn carriages – and, unusually, it is still displayed in the very buildings where the Potocki family kept it. A short walk from the castle in this small town in southeastern Poland, you will find gala carriages, hunting wagons and sleighs parked exactly where they stood around 1900. For many visitors it is the highlight of a day at Łańcut.
Around the turn of the 20th century the Potockis commissioned French architect Armand Bauqué to remodel their residence. As part of the project he designed a new horse complex: Neo-Baroque stables replaced older Neoclassical ones, and in 1902 a new coach house with a vast harnessing hall was completed. The stable fittings were ordered from the Viennese firm R.Ph. Waagner. According to the museum, the building came through World War II without major losses, so the carriages never left their original setting.
There are two collections: 55 vehicles that belonged to the Potockis and nearly 80 acquired by the museum since the war. The historic carriages came from top makers in Vienna, London and Paris, such as Lohner and Labourdette. They have been conserved rather than restored, so they remain in remarkably original condition.
The Stables and Coach House are part of the main castle route and share one ticket with the castle's ground and first floors. The museum estimates about 2 hours for the whole route; allow 30–45 minutes for the carriages alone. A fixed audio guide is available in English and German, among other languages. Kids usually love this part – the sleighs and enormous carriages are easier to relate to than state rooms.
As of October 2026, according to the museum:
Łańcut is about 20 km (12 miles) east of Rzeszów and its airport (RZE), on the A4 motorway and the Kraków–Rzeszów–Przemyśl rail line; Kraków is about two and a half hours away by car. The stables and coach house are on 3 Maja Street, at the edge of the castle park. The museum has no parking lot of its own; use the paid parking zone nearby.
Absolutely, if you are visiting Łańcut Castle anyway – it is included in the standard ticket. Combine it with the castle interiors, the park and the 18th-century Łańcut Synagogue nearby.
