St Joseph Collegiate Church in Klimontów

St Joseph’s Collegiate Church in Klimontów is one of Poland’s most original Baroque churches. It was founded by Chancellor Jerzy Ossoliński, and its design is associated with the Italian architect Wawrzyniec Senes. Construction began in 1643 and, interrupted several times, lasted almost a century, so the present building records several stages of history and the founder’s ambition.

Elliptical nave and interior

The elliptical nave, ambulatory and galleries create an almost theatrical space. Look for the stucco work by Jan Chrzciciel Falconi, Baroque furnishings, large confessionals and the founder’s crypt. Do not stop at the façade: let your eye follow the entire curve of the nave to understand the architect’s idea.

The church in Klimontów’s history

From the beginning, the collegiate church served both parish and collegiate functions. Its construction was interrupted by the founder’s death, wars and invasions, and it was consecrated in 1741 while some work was still unfinished. This long process explains its distinctive character and difference from typical single-nave Baroque churches.

Practical information

The collegiate church is active, not a museum with guaranteed all-day access. Visit outside services and check the parish’s current arrangements before travelling. Allow 30–45 minutes for the façade and interior. Klimontów combines well with Sandomierz, Krzyżtopór Castle and other regional monuments.
