Castles
Klimontów, Holy Cross
A village road in Ossolin drops into a deep gully, with a stone arch spanning it overhead. That is all that remains of one of the grandest residences in the Sandomierz region – the castle of Grand Chancellor Jerzy Ossoliński. The story of its end sounds like a treasure tale, but it is documented.
The first fortified seat on a spur cut off by gullies was built in the 14th or 15th century by the Toporczyk family, who in the 16th century took the name Ossoliński from the village. The chronicler Jan Długosz mentioned it in 1456. In 1621 it passed to Jerzy Ossoliński, later Grand Chancellor of the Crown, who in 1633–1640 replaced the old stronghold with a new four-sided castle: four three-storey wings around a small courtyard, a round tower with a chapel, and parapets. An arched bridge and a free-standing gatehouse led to the castle, and across the gully lay an outer bailey with its own walls and bastions.
In the 18th century, with owners changing often, the castle fell into decay. In 1816 its owner Antoni Ledóchowski had it blown up, probably hoping to find hidden treasure. The round tower with remains of its parapet, the bridge and the bridge gate survived, and for years the ruins were used as a source of building stone. In 1944 the Germans blew up the tower as a potential observation post, and the remaining walls were taken down to firm up a tank crossing. Since then the only surviving part of the castle has been the bridge arch. The castle site was tidied up in 2019.
A watercolour by Zygmunt Vogel from 1794 shows what the residence looked like: a four-sided building with a tower, the bridge and the gate. Ossoliński also founded the church in Gołąb and the collegiate church in nearby Klimontów, and the castle's decoration is thought to have resembled the Loreto House in Gołąb.
Ossolin is about 4 km east of Klimontów. The bridge stands by a village road in the gully, so you can see it freely; 15–30 minutes is enough. Combine the visit with St Joseph's Collegiate Church in Klimontów – another of Ossoliński's foundations.
