Cistercian Abbey in Koprzywnica

Koprzywnica Cistercian Abbey is one of the most valuable religious monuments near Sandomierz. The abbey was founded in 1185, when monks from Morimond in France were brought here. The Romanesque Basilica of St Florian preserves stone wall sections, Gothic details and later Baroque additions. The best surprise for architecture lovers is the surviving east wing of the former monastery.

Basilica and abbey history

The church was built from dressed stone blocks from the early 13th century onwards. Inside, look for the rib vaults, Gothic wall paintings, Baroque façade, sacristy and chapel. After the Cistercian abbey was dissolved in 1819, the church became a parish church. It therefore remains a living place of worship rather than only a museum.

Chapter house and lapidarium

The Romanesque east wing of the former monastery has survived with its chapter house. Its vault rests on two columns set in the middle of the room, clearly showing the construction of medieval Cistercian architecture. The chapter house contains a lapidarium of architectural fragments. The surviving east wing is the highlight for architecture lovers.

Practical information

Visits to the monastic section require prior contact and are usually guided; the basilica is accessible during services and between them. Check current hours and access arrangements with the parish before travelling. Allow around 40–60 minutes if you want to see the chapter house. Koprzywnica combines easily with Sandomierz, Klimontów and other stops on the Cistercian Trail. Free parking is available by the church.
