Dzików Castle (Tarnowski Castle) in Tarnobrzeg

Dzików Castle, also called the Tarnowski Castle, in Tarnobrzeg (say "tar-NOH-bzheg") is a former magnate residence set in a landscaped park in southeastern Poland. Today it houses the Historical Museum of the City of Tarnobrzeg and the Dzików Collection, a collection of art and a library tied to the powerful Tarnowski family. If you are looking for things to do in Tarnobrzeg, or a stop between Sandomierz and Rzeszów, it is a rewarding visit of a couple of hours.

Where it is

Tarnobrzeg stands on the Vistula River in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, about 25 km from the old town of Sandomierz and roughly 80 km from Rzeszów, the nearest airport. From Kraków it is about 180 km. Most visitors come by car.

History in brief

A fortified brick tower house stood here in the 15th century and now forms the western part of the palace. In 1522 Jan Spytek Tarnowski bought the estate, and it stayed with the Tarnowski family for more than four centuries. The main wing was added after 1638, and the east wing in the 1770s, giving the palace its horseshoe plan.

Austrian troops almost entirely destroyed the residence in 1809. After the failed November Uprising of 1830 to 1831 the family settled here permanently, and the palace was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by the architect Francesco Maria Lanci; from 1834 it was the family's main seat. On the night of 21 to 22 December 1927 a fire gutted it. According to the museum, the rebuilding of 1928 to 1929 gave it the early-Baroque look and large tower you see today. After 1945 it belonged to the state, and since 2011 it has been a museum.

How to visit

You cannot wander the rooms alone. Visits are either guided or accompanied by a museum employee. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours, or about two with the park.
