Cathedral Bell Tower, Sandomierz

Every evening – so the local tradition handed down in Sandomierz goes – the cathedral bell remembers those who fell at the Battle of Varna and those who drowned in the Vistula. The tall stone bell tower beside the Cathedral Basilica was built in 1737–1743 and for centuries was more than a home for bells: it sounded the alarm for fires and invasions, and its cellars held priests who defied the Tsarist authorities. Today the interior is open to visitors.

History: a tower with a copper dome

The present tower replaced an earlier one demolished in 1736. Construction was first supervised by Canon Jan Kalisz and, after his death in 1739, by Canon Marcin Jasiński. In 1759 the tower was crowned with a dome topped by an octagonal lantern, and work was finally completed in 1760, when copper sheeting was bought to cover it. It is a late Baroque stone building and one of the landmarks of the Cathedral Hill skyline.

Besides its church role – calling the faithful to prayer and accompanying ceremonies – the tower had an important civic function: the cathedral bells warned townspeople of fire and enemy attack. In the 19th century, priests who resisted the Tsarist authorities (Sandomierz then lay in the Russian-ruled part of Poland) were imprisoned in its two-level cellars, and during the German occupation Jewish residents found shelter there.

Interesting facts

The tradition of the evening bell is linked to the Battle of Varna in 1444, where King Władysław III fell, and to the memory of the Vistula's victims – the river that for centuries was both a source of Sandomierz's wealth and a danger. It is an oral tradition, worth listening for at dusk on Cathedral Hill.

The bell tower stands right next to the Cathedral Basilica on ulica Mariacka, a few minutes' walk from the Market Square and the Opatów Gate. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough for the interior, so combine it with the cathedral: entry to the basilica is free, and visitors' donations go towards the upkeep and restoration of both basilica and bell tower. Access to the tower depends on the season and services – the cathedral information point has current details (tel. +48 695 068 519). Audio guides can be hired in the cathedral (PLN 13 standard, PLN 9 reduced). Nearby are Długosz House and the Royal Castle. Cathedral Hill involves a climb, and there are stairs inside the tower.
