The Cathedral Bell Tower in Sandomierz

The Baroque Cathedral Bell Tower in Sandomierz stands beside the basilica on Cathedral Hill, close to the old town and the Vistula. Built of stone in 1737–1743, it is one of the distinctive features of Sandomierz’s skyline. It is a small but worthwhile stop for visitors who want to see not only the cathedral itself, but also its historic surroundings.

What you can see inside

The tower interior is open to visitors. You can admire the roof-truss structure, see the illuminated bells and learn about the iconography connected with the building. Another feature is access to the first level of the cellars. It is easy to combine the visit with the Cathedral Basilica and a walk across Cathedral Hill.

A stop on a Sandomierz walk

The tower is on Mariacka Street, right beside the cathedral and close to the market square and Opatów Gate. This makes it easy to include in a short walk through Sandomierz’s old town. The tower itself is not a multi-hour attraction, but it adds context to a visit to the cathedral, Długosz House and the other historic buildings on the hill.

Opening arrangements may depend on the season, services and the organisation of visits. Check current information at the tourist information point or with the cathedral administrator before travelling. Entry to the basilica is free, while additional spaces may have separate rules. Car parks are located below Cathedral Hill; the approach and stairs may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility.
