Sandomierz, Holy Cross
The Needle's Eye (Ucho Igielne), also called the Dominican Gate, is a narrow passage through Sandomierz's old defensive walls, leading west from the Old Town towards the Dominican friary at St James's Church. It is the only surviving wicket gate of the town's medieval fortifications and one of the most intriguing corners of the Sandomierz escarpment. Walking through takes a moment, but the name alone explains why it is worth stopping.
Work on Sandomierz's brick walls began in the second half of the 14th century and continued until the turn of the 15th. The fortifications were over 1,700 m long and enclosed almost 16 ha of the town. The wall was built of brick in monk bond on a stone foundation. Besides the gates – Opatów, Kraków, Lublin and the later Zawichost Gate – the town had several wicket gates for pedestrians. According to the Medieval Heritage portal, the most important and oldest of them was the Dominican gate on the western side of town.
As early as the 17th century, the escarpment undercut by the Vistula took part of the eastern walls, together with the Lublin Gate. In 1810 the authorities of the Duchy of Warsaw issued the first orders to demolish the sections at risk, and after the fire of 1813 residents dismantled the fortifications en masse for building material. Of the gates, only the Opatów Gate survived; of the wicket gates, only the Needle's Eye. That makes this small passage, alongside the Opatów Gate, the most precious trace of the town's old fortifications.
The gate is a public footpath, free and open at all times. The steps are steep and unsuitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs; after rain and in winter they can be slippery. The gate itself takes 10–15 minutes, but it is best worked into a walk from the Market Square to St James's Church and on through Queen Jadwiga's Gorge. Leave your car in a car park outside the heart of the Old Town.
