Drohiczyn Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Drohiczyn is the principal church of the Diocese of Drohiczyn. The Baroque church stands on Kościelna Street in the historic centre. A visit combines sacred art with the story of Drohiczyn, a former religious and political centre of Podlasie on the Bug River.

History of the cathedral

A first church reportedly stood here as early as 1392. Jesuits began building the present church after 1696, and it was consecrated in 1723. After the order was suppressed, the Piarists took over the church. The building suffered damage during both world wars and was rebuilt after the destruction. On 5 June 1991, when the Diocese of Drohiczyn was established, the church became its cathedral.

What to see

Some of the original Baroque furnishings were lost, but important works survive: a late-Gothic crucifix from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, a Baroque sculpture of the Risen Christ, a late-Renaissance baptismal font, a Rococo monstrance from 1786 and paintings of the Holy Trinity and the Annunciation. Clergy connected with the region are buried in the crypts. Look also at the façade and the former Jesuit buildings around the church.

The cathedral is at 10A Kościelna Street in Drohiczyn. It is an active church, so plan a visit around services and keep quiet inside. The parish publishes current pastoral information but does not list fixed tourist visiting hours. Check access before travelling and combine the cathedral with a walk through the market square, Góra Zamkowa and the Bug riverside.
