St. Stanislaus and St. Anne Church in Knychówek

In Knychówek, a village in the commune of Korczew, stands the Church of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, and St. Anne — a mid-17th-century temple whose founders were related to King Jan III Sobieski.

From the Korczewskis to the Wiesiołowskis

The parish dates back to the 15th century — the first, wooden church was founded around 1460 by Stanisław Korczewski, castellan officer of Kamieniec, and his mother Kordula. The present church was built between 1631 and 1646 and finished in 1668 at the behest of Krzysztof Wiesiołowski and his wife Aleksandra Marianna Sobieska, aunt of King Jan III Sobieski. The building combines Gothic and Renaissance features.

Furnishings and stories

The Baroque high altar of 1727, founded by Wiktorzyn Kuczyński, owner of the palace in nearby Korczew, holds a painting of St. Stanislaus; the side altars are Renaissance. In the crypt rest the Kuczyńskis and Ostrowskis, former owners of the Korczew palace. During the January Uprising services were celebrated here by Father General Stanisław Brzóska, who was hiding in the Korczew palace.

In practice

Next to the church stands a masonry belfry and a three-sided wayside shrine from 1806 with figures of Christ at the Column, the Virgin Mary and St. John of Nepomuk. The village lies near Drohiczyn, so the church pairs naturally with a visit to the Bug river landscape.
