Siemiatycze, Podlachia
On the chancel vault you can still see the Lis (Fox) coat of arms of the Sapieha family, who built this church in the 17th century. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Siemiatycze is the town's oldest and most valuable monument: a brick basilica built in 1626–1637 and remodelled in the 18th century by the Vincentian missionaries in late Baroque style. It stands at 3 Maja 2, surrounded by a wall with a bell tower and the buildings of the former monastery, and inside it holds Régence-style altars and a rare set of 18th-century confessionals.
The parish was founded in 1456 by Michał Kmita Sudymontowicz; the first church was most likely wooden. The present church was begun in 1626 by Lew Sapieha, Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman of Lithuania, and completed in 1637 by his son Kazimierz Leon after his death. It was consecrated a year later. Originally it was a late Renaissance building.
In 1719 the parish was taken over by the Congregation of the Mission of St Vincent de Paul. The missionaries built a monastery designed by Karol Antoni Bay and Wincenty Rachetti, enclosed the site with a wall and bell towers, and in 1737 gave the façade its late Baroque form. After a fire in 1754 the aisle vaults were rebuilt. On 4 December 1793 King Stanisław August Poniatowski attended mass here. In 1832, in reprisal for the November Uprising against Russian rule, the Russian authorities dissolved the missionary house, and in 1863 a statue of St Michael the Archangel was placed on the gate in front of the façade. During the Second World War one of the two 18th-century bell towers was demolished.
The missionaries commissioned six confessionals, which together formed a cycle about sin, repentance and forgiveness. Four remain in Siemiatycze; the other two, with paintings of Mary Magdalene and the Good Shepherd, were moved after 1907 to the church in nearby Dołubowo. Older literature attributed some of the paintings to Szymon Czechowicz, but this attribution is not confirmed. During the partitions of Poland the former monastery served, among other things, as a military hospital.
