Saints Mary and Nicholas Basilica in Bielsk Podlaski

The Minor Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas stands on Kościelna Street in the historic centre of Bielsk Podlaski. It is an active church and one of the town’s most important heritage sites, bringing together local history, architecture and religious tradition.

History

The present masonry church was built in 1783–1784 with funding from Izabela Branicka, the owner of Białystok and sister of Poland’s last king. The design is attributed to Szymon Bogumił Zug. The church was consecrated on 9 October 1796 and was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II on 28 August 1996. The parish has medieval roots, so the present building is the latest church on a long-standing sacred site.

What to see

The interior has a classical character, marked by a rhythm of twenty Doric columns. The high altar contains a Visitation painting by Sylwester Augustyn Mirys. Also look for a 1622 Crucifixion painting, an organ built in 1902 by Vilnius organ maker Piotr Wojciechowicz, and 1912 polychrome paintings depicting the Apostles. The basilica complex also includes an 1843 bell tower and relics of Blessed Father Antoni Beszta-Borowski.
