Saint Michael the Archangel Church in Bielsk Podlaski

A wooden church in the city centre

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel at 36 Mickiewicza Street is one of Bielsk Podlaski’s distinctive historic monuments. The wooden church was built in 1789 as a Uniate church and now belongs to an Orthodox parish. Its colourful façade, turrets and icons visible from outside make it worth seeing from the churchyard.

History and architecture

The nave has an almost octagonal plan, while a porch with a bell tower was added in 1914 and the altar area in 1989. The church entered the heritage register in 1976. Behind it stands a baptistery designed by Jerzy Nowosielski, an important Polish artist also known for icon painting. It adds an interesting link between Orthodox tradition and modern artistic form.

Visits and nearby sights

The church is an active place of worship and no fixed tourist access to the interior has been confirmed. Plan to view it from outside and ask the parish about entry. The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God is about 300 metres away and the basilica about 400 metres away. Together they make a compact route through Bielsk Podlaski’s sacred architecture, close to the market square and old streets.
