Napoleon's House in Białystok

On busy Jana Pawła II Avenue, at No. 62, stands a small Neoclassical rotunda with a domed roof and a columned portico that locals call Napoleon's House (Domek Napoleona). The name comes from a romantic legend – in reality it was a customs house built in 1838, the only building of its kind in the city. It makes a short stop for history and architecture lovers and can only be seen from the outside.

History: a customs house on the edge of an empire

From 1815 to 1918, the border between the Kingdom of Poland – a state tied to the Russian Empire – and Russia proper ran about 9 km west of here. After the failed November Uprising of 1830–1831 it also became a customs border. So in 1838 a customs house was built on the edge of Białystok to clear merchants bringing goods from the west. It served this purpose for barely a dozen years: in 1851 the customs border was abolished.

The rotunda has walls that taper slightly towards the top, a dome and a portico. It was entered in the register of historic monuments as early as 1952.

Where the name comes from

According to legend, Napoleon Bonaparte stopped here in 1812 on his way to Moscow and said farewell to Maria Walewska. The story has no basis in fact: the Moscow campaign and the emperor's death in 1821 both predate the customs house, and Napoleon never visited Białystok. It is precisely this contrast between name and history that makes the place worth a look.

Current state

The building once housed a restaurant. On 27 July 2015 the city's municipal property board took it back from the tenant and secured it, and the city announced plans to prepare it for sale in consultation with the regional heritage conservator. The building remains unused and is not open to visitors.

View the rotunda from the pavement – do not enter the property. 10–20 minutes is enough. It stands about 4 km west of Kościuszko Market Square, in the Wysoki Stoczek district; the avenue is a busy main road, so it is easier to come by city bus or park in a side street. Back in the centre, combine the visit with the Branicki Palace and the town hall on Kościuszko Market Square, home of the Podlaskie Museum – a good way to round off the story of Białystok as a former borderland town.
