Church of the Resurrection in Białystok

The Church of the Resurrection at 9 Władysława Sikorskiego Street in Białystok is a contemporary Orthodox church in the Leśna Dolina district. Its form refers to the tradition of Old Russian churches of the Novgorod school and Byzantine Gothic architecture. Its domes and interior make it a notable stop on a multicultural Białystok route.

History of the building

The church continues the dedication of a former temple on Sienkiewicza Street, demolished in 1938. Construction of the new church began in 1991 as nearby housing estates expanded. Building work and interior decoration lasted more than 15 years, and the church was consecrated in 2006. The design was prepared by Jan Kabac and Jerzy Uścinowicz, with the structural design by Władysław Ryżyński.

Architecture and interior

The church is about 25 metres high and has 600 square metres of usable floor area. Its 30-metre bell tower contains two bells, while the main building is crowned by a distinctive crystal-shaped dome. The altar area contains an oak iconostasis with icons painted by students of the Iconography School in Bielsk Podlaski. The walls and domes are covered with frescoes by artists from Belarus and Andrzej Rummy.
