Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic

For almost sixty years Białystok's symphony musicians played without a home of their own – in a theatre, in a small palace, in an old hall on Podleśna Street. Today they have one of the most modern music buildings in this part of Europe: a concrete-and-glass block in Central Park, with a roof you can climb in summer for a view over the whole city.

History: an orchestra in search of a home

The State Symphony Orchestra was founded in Białystok in 1954. The musicians had no base – rehearsals and concerts took place in venues such as the Aleksander Węgierko Drama Theatre and the Guest Palace. After twenty years the ensemble was granted philharmonic status and moved to a hall on Podleśna Street. The idea for a new arts centre emerged in 2004; the architectural competition was won by the studio of Professor Marek Budzyński, whose work also includes the Warsaw University Library. The foundation stone was laid on 22 April 2006, and the new building opened on 28 September 2012 with the musical "Korczak" and Moniuszko's opera "The Haunted Manor". Since 2019 the institution has been named after the composer Stanisław Moniuszko.

What to see

• The Main Stage – 771 seats, expandable to over a thousand; it is the largest stage in Poland and has the country's second-largest organ.
• The fire curtain painted by Rafał Olbiński and Teresa Murak's cast-iron sculpture "Head of a Composer" on the roof – 2 m tall and weighing 2.5 tonnes.
• the glazed foyer, with glass panels decorated with musical notes and handwritten score corrections,
• the rooftop viewing terrace and the amphitheatre on the north side, used in spring and summer for concerts and film screenings.

Did you know?

The building is 32 metres high with almost 13,000 m² of usable space, and the gardens around it were designed to look like a Podlasie meadow with ponds. From its opening until mid-2025 it hosted 3,836 events attended by about 1.47 million people. Between 2012 and 2020 it was home to the Halfway Festival of folk and singer-songwriter music, with performers such as Wilco and Emilíana Torrini. As early as 1995, still as the Białystok Philharmonic, the orchestra played at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The viewing terrace is open in June, July and August on Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00–20:00; tickets cost PLN 15, children under 13 go free with an adult, and the terrace closes in rain or strong wind. The building is at ul. Odeska 1; the nearest bus stops are "Kalinowskiego / Opera i Filharmonia Podlaska", and the railway station is about a 20-minute walk away. Municipal car parks on Kalinowskiego, Kijowska and Młynowa streets are paid on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00. The opera stands next to the Białystok Puppet Theatre and the Orthodox Church of St Mary Magdalene, so a concert evening combines easily with a walk around the centre.
