St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Białystok

St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Białystok is the city's main Orthodox church and the seat of the Białystok–Gdańsk diocese of the Polish Orthodox Church. Its white classical facade, the silhouette of its dome and bell tower, and its frescoed interior make it one of the defining sights of Lipowa Street, the city's main pedestrian route. For visitors it is also the best introduction to Podlasie, the region where Poland's Catholic and Orthodox worlds meet.

Where it is and how to get there

Białystok lies in northeastern Poland, about 200 km from Warsaw; direct trains take roughly two to two and a half hours, and Warsaw is the nearest major airport. The cathedral stands in the city center at Lipowa 15, about a 15-minute walk from the train station and a few minutes from the main square.

A short history

A wooden Uniate church stood here by the early 18th century; the oldest surviving record dates from 1727, when Hetman Jan Klemens Branicki, the town's owner, made a donation to its priest. As industry grew under Russian rule and the Orthodox population increased, a larger church was needed. The cornerstone was blessed on March 21, 1843, construction was led by Dawid Zabłudowski, and Metropolitan Józef of Vilnius consecrated the finished building in 1846.

Tsar Nicholas II visited in 1897. Between the world wars it was one of only two Orthodox churches still open in the city. It became a cathedral in 1951, and since 1992 it has held the relics of St. Gabriel of Zabłudów, brought from Grodno with a procession of some 70,000 faithful. Pope John Paul II visited in 1991.

Architecture

The cathedral is a classical-style church on a Greek-cross plan, typical of the Russian Empire in the early 19th century. A hemispherical dome rises on a tall drum over the crossing, and a bell tower with a spire stands over the entrance. The building is 40 meters (131 feet) tall.

What to see inside

• The iconostasis from 1846, a three-tier wooden screen from the Vilnius school, with icons by Moscow painter Adrian Malakhov.
• Frescoes by Józef Łotowski (1975–1976), including the Last Judgment above the choir and the Deesis in the dome.
• The relics of St. Gabriel of Zabłudów, the cathedral's main place of devotion.
• A copy of the Białystok Icon of the Mother of God; the original was taken to Russia in 1915 and lost.
• The lower church of St. Seraphim of Sarov, where a Sunday liturgy is served in Polish.

Visiting tips

This is a working cathedral with no ticket desk or fixed sightseeing hours, and admission is free (as of October 2026). Come outside service times; the parish posts its current schedule online (in Polish). Dress modestly, men should remove hats, and ask before taking photos. Plan 20–40 minutes. Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially combined with a walk along Lipowa Street to the Branicki Palace, or a half-day trip to the Orthodox monastery in Supraśl, just outside the city.
