Orthodox Holy Spirit church in Białystok

The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit in Białystok’s Wysoki Stoczek district is one of the two largest Orthodox churches in Poland. Its monumental two-level form stands out with five domes and a bright concrete-and-brick exterior. This is an active parish, not a museum, so visits should be planned around services and conducted with respect for worshippers.

A church built from the ground up

The new parish was established in 1982 as Białystok’s Orthodox community grew. Construction continued from the 1980s, and the church was consecrated in 1999. Its architecture refers to the Descent of the Holy Spirit: the domes and walls echo the symbolism of tongues of fire.

Frescoes, iconostasis and the lower church

The interior combines extensive fresco decoration, an iconostasis and a two-level layout. The entrance to the lower section leads to the Church of St Nicholas, while the upper church is the main worship space. The five domes symbolise Christ and the four Evangelists.

The church does not operate like a museum with a ticket desk and fixed sightseeing route, so check the current service schedule on the parish website or contact the parish office before travelling. The published office hours are Monday–Friday 8:00–11:00 and 16:00–18:00, and Saturday 8:00–11:00, except for major church feasts.
