Siemiatycze Reservoirs

In the southern part of Podlachia, in the valley of the Kamionka river, stretch the Siemiatycze reservoirs — three artificial ponds built in the 1970s that now form the town's main recreation area. On one of them operates a municipal swimming spot with a beach, a pier and a water equipment rental, while running and cycling trails wind around them.

The reservoirs were created in the 1970s for recreational, ecological and economic purposes. Reservoir no. 1, the lowest-lying one, covers 6.2 ha; the two upper ones total 27.4 ha, with an average depth of 2 m and a maximum of 5.1 m, and the water surface sits at 138.25 m above sea level. They were dammed at the site of the former mouth of the Muchawiec stream.

Swimming area, pier, kayaks

On Sportowa Street, near the Orlik sports field, operates a municipal bathing area with a guarded zone and a sandy beach. The pond is edged by a floating pier, partly roofed over, and the beach has a playground and an outdoor gym. Those who prefer active leisure can rent a kayak or a pedal boat; anglers catch catfish, pike, carp, bream and even eel. The water stays clean, and the town makes the grounds around the reservoirs available free of charge.

Practical information

Entrances to the reservoirs are from Spacerowa, Sportowa and Plażowa streets. It is worth combining a visit with a stroll around Siemiatycze — the Church of the Assumption and the former synagogue are nearby — or with a trip to the sanctuary on Grabarka hill (about 9.5 km).
