Brama Bolechowicka (Bolechowice Gate) on the Jura

Brama Bolechowicka is a distinctive rock formation at the entrance to Bolechowice Valley, not a building or a ticketed attraction. Two limestone pillars, around 30 metres high, form a natural rock gate and one of the best-known views in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Looking into the valley, Filar Abazego is on the left and Filar Pokutników on the right. It is a good short-walk destination near Bolechowice.

Valley and nature

Beyond the gate, a narrow, winding valley extends for about 1.5 kilometres. A path follows the Bolechówka stream. A small waterfall runs over rocky steps; its appearance depends on recent rainfall. The valley also contains xerothermic grasslands, scrub, caves and other karst features. Before reaching the gate, look for a karst spring protected as a natural monument.

Walking and climbing

The valley is a free-to-enter outdoor site with no fixed opening hours. The yellow PTTK trail can be linked with a longer walk through the nearby Jurassic valleys. A route proposed by the Małopolska Landscape Parks team is about 13.1 km, starting and finishing in Bolechowice. The gate is also a climbing area. Nature-reserve restrictions apply, so use only permitted routes and avoid leaving the paths unnecessarily.

Practical information

After rain, the rocks, roots and streamside approach can be slippery. Hiking shoes are a better choice than everyday footwear. Keep away from cliff faces when there is a rockfall risk, take your rubbish with you and do not damage the grassland.
