Kraków Valleys Landscape Park

The Kraków Valleys Landscape Park (Dolinki Krakowskie, roughly "doh-LEEN-kee krah-KOV-skyeh") is a patchwork of limestone valleys, gorges and rock towers that begins right at Kraków's northwestern city limits. Established in 1981, it stretches toward Trzebinia and Olkusz and is where Kraków locals go hiking, cycling and rock climbing. The park at a glance

The park lies on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, also called the Polish Jura. Its official 2025 booklet gives an area of 20,686 hectares (about 80 square miles); a 2024 regional resolution redrawing the borders lists roughly 23,500 hectares. Most valleys run north to south, with sheer white limestone walls about 160 million years old, clear streams and free-standing rock towers with playful names such as "Elephant's Butt." The valleys are also important bat habitat.

Best valleys to visit

• Bolechowice Valley: short and dramatic, with the Bolechowice Gate, two limestone pillars forming a natural doorway. It is the only spot inside the park's nature reserves where climbing is allowed.
• Kobylany Valley: a grassy floor between tall crags, one of the busiest climbing areas near Kraków.
• Będkowska Valley: the longest of the popular valleys, with a paved lane, the Sokolica and Elephant's Butt rocks and the little Szum waterfall.
• Kluczwoda Valley: a nature reserve with traces of a medieval castle; Wierzchowska Górna Cave is at its upper end.
• Racławka Valley: Małopolska's largest landscape reserve (about 474 ha), with three nature trails starting at the Dubie parking lot.
• Eliaszówka Valley: old beech forest and the 17th-century Discalced Carmelite monastery in Czerna.

Caves and heritage

Two caves are open to visitors, each with its own ticket: Wierzchowska Górna Cave (a guided 700 m route) and Nietoperzowa (Bat) Cave at Jerzmanowice, a Stone Age site open from April 1 to October 31. Wooden Gothic churches in Paczółtowice and Racławice belong to the Wooden Architecture Trail.

Suggested hike

The park's own recommended day route is a 13.1 km (8 mile) loop: Bolechowice – Kluczwoda Valley – Wierzchowska Górna Cave – Zelków – Bolechowice Gate – Bolechowice. It combines castle rocks, a cave tour and the park's most photogenic gorge. Long-distance options include the yellow Trail of the Jurassic Valleys and the blue Trail of the Jurassic Fortresses, which starts at Rudawa train station. Cyclists can follow a signed 26 km red loop from Bolechowice.

Practical information (as of October 2026)

Access to the valleys and trails is free; caves and some village parking lots charge fees in Polish złoty (PLN). There is no visitor center or single entrance, and signage is in Polish. From Kraków, drive 20–40 minutes depending on the valley, take a regional train to Rudawa, or ride city bus 310 to Będkowice. Stay on marked paths inside reserves. Valley floors get muddy after rain; the paved lane in Będkowska Valley is the easiest option with a stroller.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially in spring and fall. Combine it with Ojców National Park a few kilometers east for a full Jura weekend.
