Kluczwoda Valley

The Kluczwoda Valley, also known as the Wierzchówka Valley, lies between Bolechowice, Zelków and Wierzchowie on the Olkusz Upland, about 15 km north-west of Kraków. The Kluczwoda stream runs through it, and its winding course gives the valley its name.

Rocks and castle traces

The valley and its slopes contain groups of limestone outcrops, including Leśna Baszta, Strzaskana Skała and Zamkowe Skały. Faint remains of a medieval castle survive on Zamkowa Skała.

Wierzchowska Cave and the reserve

The upper valley contains Wierzchowska Górna Cave, a ticketed site visited only with a guide. Its illuminated tourist route is about 700 m long and takes around 50 minutes; the cave temperature is about 8°C. Mamutowa Cave is next door, but it is a separate site and is not visited in the same guided format; it is known partly for climbing. The 35.29-ha Kluczwoda Valley Nature Reserve protects oak-hornbeam woods, riparian forest and limestone rocks.

Practical information

Marked trails and educational paths cross the reserve; stay on the designated routes. Allow around 1–2 hours for a short valley walk. A longer route linking Bolechowice, the Kluczwoda Valley, Wierzchowska Cave and the Bolechowicka Valley is about 13 km. The cave has a car park on Dziurawiec Street in Wierzchowie, followed by a walk of about 10 minutes. Current Wierzchowska Cave prices are PLN 35 regular, PLN 28 reduced and PLN 115 for a 2+2 family ticket. Check seasonal hours and prices before travelling.
