Kluczwoda Valley

The Kluczwoda Valley (pronounced roughly "klooch-VO-dah"), also called the Wierzchówka Valley, is one of the eight "Kraków Valleys" – a winding wooded gorge lined with white limestone crags, the scant ruins of a medieval castle and the longest show cave in the Polish Jura. It lies only about 15 km (9 miles) northwest of Kraków, which makes it one of the easiest nature day trips from the city.

Where is it?

The valley runs for about 6 km between the villages of Wierzchowie, Bolechowice and Wielka Wieś, inside the Kraków Valleys Landscape Park. Its stream, the Kluczwoda, flows into the Rudawa River. Kraków Airport is roughly 10 km away. By car it takes about half an hour from central Kraków; Bolechowice, at the southern end, has a train station on the line from Kraków.

Rocks and castle ruins

Limestone outcrops with names like Zamkowa Skała (Castle Rock), Rogata Turnia, Leśna Baszta and Gackowa Baszta rise above the trees. On top of Castle Rock are faint remains of a knight's castle from the early 14th century – not much to see, but the view down the valley is worth the climb. Part of the valley is a 35-hectare nature reserve protecting woodland and rocks.

Wierzchowska Cave

Wierzchowska Górna is the longest cave in the Jura open to tourists. The lit route is about 700 m long and visited only on a guided tour of about 50 minutes. It is a constant 7.8°C (46°F) inside, so bring a warm layer even in summer. The route is not accessible for wheelchair users. Tours are in Polish; ask the office about English options.

• September 1 – October 31: 10 am – 4 pm, tours on the hour (closing time is the last entry),
• May–August: 10 am – 5 pm; April: weekends; November and January–March: 10 am – 3 pm by phone booking only,

Hiking the valley

The blue trail runs from Bolechowice through Gacki and along the valley; a black bike route links the cave with Ojców National Park. An older black footpath from Modlnica has been closed, so follow current signage. Allow 1–2 hours for a valley walk and about half a day with the cave. The valley and reserve are free to enter.

Who is it for, and when to go

It suits families well: the short trail sections are easy, and the cave – with a family ticket – feels like a real adventure for kids. Spring brings wood anemones on the forest floor, and fall turns the beech woods around the white crags gold and red. On hot summer days the cool cave is a welcome break. Paths can be muddy after rain, so wear shoes with good grip.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – if you want limestone scenery and a cave without traveling far from Kraków, this is one of the best options. Combine it with nearby Ojców National Park for a full day.
