Masuria (Mazury) is the land of the Great Masurian Lakes in north-eastern Poland. This guide covers Giżycko between lakes Niegocin and Kisajno, Mikołajki on Lake Śniardwy, Poland's largest lake, the small castle town of Ryn, the Węgorzewo area on Lake Mamry, Mrągowo, Krutyń and the Piecki area, Ruciane-Nida in the Piska Forest, and Kętrzyn with the Wolf's Lair at Gierłoż. We also include Reszel and Święta Lipka, which historically belong to Warmia but sit on the same route, plus the Ełk area. Olsztyn is left out on purpose — it is a separate trip.
Most visitors come for sailing, but the region also packs a 19th-century Prussian fortress, Teutonic castles, one of Poland's finest Baroque churches and the remains of Second World War headquarters into a short drive. Below are ten places for a first visit, one- and two-day itineraries with driving times, and what changes with the seasons: boat cruises and kayak rentals run from spring to September, while most museums and monuments stay open in winter 2026/27 with shorter hours.
The region brings together attractions from these towns. Open a town guide or its list of attractions.

By car, Giżycko and Mikołajki are about 250–280 km from Warsaw, and Giżycko is about 250 km from Gdańsk. The nearest airport is Olsztyn-Mazury at Szymany, about 70 km from Mikołajki.
Trains from Olsztyn reach Kętrzyn and Giżycko (the line continues to Ełk), and Ruciane-Nida also has a railway station. Public transport to Mikołajki, Ryn, Święta Lipka, Gierłoż and Mamerki is limited, so a car or a bike is the practical way to link the sights. Good bases are Giżycko for the north (Kętrzyn, Węgorzewo, Mamerki) and Mikołajki for the south (Krutyń, Ruciane-Nida). In season some legs can be done by boat, for example Giżycko to Mikołajki.
May to September is the water season. The boat operator Żegluga Mazurska runs day cruises from early May to the end of September and evening cruises in July and August; kayak rentals on the Krutynia work in the same months, and the swing bridge in Giżycko opens for boats at set times in July and August. Summer holidays are busy — June and September are quieter.

Giżycko is the most convenient base for Boyen Fortress, the Wolf's Lair, Mamerki and Kętrzyn. Mikołajki works better for Krutyń, Ruciane-Nida and Lake Łuknajno. The two towns are about 40 km apart via Ryn.
One full day covers the main sights on land: Święta Lipka, the Wolf's Lair and Boyen Fortress. Two days let you add Mamerki, Kętrzyn, Ryn and Mikołajki. For cruising, kayaking or sailing plan several days in season.
