Mikołajki, Warmian-Masurian
The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mikołajki (roughly "mee-ko-WAY-kee") is a pale, Neoclassical church with a tall yellow-brick clock tower, a short walk from the town's busy marina in the heart of the Masurian Lake District. Next door, the small Museum of the Polish Reformation tells a story most visitors to Poland never hear: that of Polish-speaking Protestants in former East Prussia. It is an easy, rewarding stop between a lake cruise and dinner on the waterfront.
Poland is overwhelmingly Catholic, but Masuria was part of Protestant Prussia for centuries, and until 1945 this town was the German-speaking Nikolaiken. A church stood here by 1522; it burned during a Tatar raid in 1656 and was replaced by a half-timbered building. That one was pulled down in 1839, and the present church was consecrated in 1842. Its design is linked to Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the great Prussian architect of Berlin; sources disagree on whether it was his own plan or the work of his school. The clock tower was added in 1880. In 1914, when Russian troops blew up the town's bridges, every window in the church shattered.
Before World War II the parish had more than 5,000 members (1925 figures). Meetings held in the parsonage led to the founding of the Confessing Church in East Prussia, the Protestant movement that resisted Nazi control of the church. Today the building serves the Masurian diocese of Poland's Evangelical-Augsburg (Lutheran) Church.
Founded in 1973 by the long-serving pastor Władysław Pilchowski, this was for decades the only museum of its kind in Poland. It displays Polish-language Protestant books and prints from Masuria and from Cieszyn Silesia in the south, and presents the Reformation as a Europe-wide movement. Labels also come in German, and guided tours are offered in Polish and German; English material is not mentioned by the parish, so a translation app helps.
As of October 2026:
Allow 30–45 minutes. In winter, call a day ahead. It is a working church, so visits are not possible during services.
Mikołajki lies in northeastern Poland, about 250–280 km (155–175 miles) by road from Warsaw. The nearest airport is Olsztyn-Mazury in Szymany, about 70 km (45 miles) away; Gdańsk is about 250 km away. The church stands on Plac Kościelny, just north of national road 16 and a few minutes on foot from the marina. Town parking lots fill up quickly in July and August.
Walk down to the marina and the lakeside promenade, then head about 5 km east to Lake Łuknajno, a biosphere reserve famous for mute swans. Lake Śniardwy, Poland's largest lake, begins just beyond.
