Ruciane-Nida, Warmian-Masurian
The Guzianka Lock (say "goo-ZHAN-ka") in Ruciane-Nida is a pair of chamber locks linking Lake Bełdany with the small Lake Guzianka Mała – the gateway from the main Great Masurian Lakes waterway to Ruciane-Nida and Lake Nidzkie in northeastern Poland. The older chamber dates from the 19th century and is a listed monument; the newer one opened in 2020. In summer it is one of the busiest spots on Masurian waters, and watching yachts rise about two meters in the chamber is free, fun and great for kids.
The first lock opened in 1879 as a wooden structure; its walls were rebuilt in brick and stone in 1899. Now called Guzianka I, it is 44 m (144 ft) long with 7.5 m wide, electrically operated gates. In the 2019 season it handled about 15,000 boats – more than any other lock in Poland – and long queues formed as yachts waited for passenger ships.
The solution was a second chamber, Guzianka II, built on the site of an old weir and opened on May 29, 2020. Today the old chamber mainly serves passenger ships and the new one serves yachts. Right next to the lock stands a bunker from 1900, a reminder that this area belonged to German East Prussia and was fortified before World War I.
Boats wait for a signal, enter from the Bełdany side and tie up. The gates close, the chamber fills, staff collect the fee, and once the levels match, boats continue toward Guzianka Mała. One cycle takes about 20 minutes. Fees can also be paid online through the Polish Waters river information service.
According to the April 2026 navigation notice from Polish Waters (as of October 2026):
Out of season, in winter 2025/26, Masurian locks ran only on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with one day's notice, until ice formed. Expect similar rules in winter 2026/27 and check the latest notice before you go. Watching from the bank is possible year-round, but July and August are the real show.
If you are in Ruciane-Nida or cruising the lakes, yes – it takes 20–40 minutes and costs nothing. Better still, ride through it: seasonal passenger cruises between Mikołajki and Ruciane-Nida pass the lock.
The lock is in the Guzianka district on the northern edge of Ruciane-Nida, near the resorts on Lake Bełdany. Ruciane-Nida is about 230–250 km (145–155 miles) by road from Warsaw and has a train station. Parking is limited to small lots at the resorts and taverns, so walking from the center is easier in peak season.
Lake Nidzkie with its quiet-zone reserve, the poet Gałczyński's museum at Pranie, the Pisz Forest and the end of the Krutynia canoe trail.
