Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński Museum in Pranie

The Masurians used to say that the meadow above Lake Nidzkie "prała" – that it smoked with morning mist – and that word gave the Pranie forester's lodge its name. From 1950 to 1953 Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński came here, and in this house in the Piska Forest he wrote, among others, "Kronika olsztyńska" (Olsztyn Chronicle) and "Niobe". His museum has been here since 1980, and in summer, concerts under the pines draw people from all over Poland.

History: from Seehorst to the poet's museum

The lodge, called Seehorst before the war, was built around 1880 as the forestry post of the village of Krzyże. Gałczyński first came in July 1950 and returned from Warsaw over the next three years as the guest of forester Stanisław Popowski. In 1952 he and his wife Natalia planned to settle by Lake Nidzkie for good, but the poet's sudden death in December 1953 ended those plans. The museum was founded in 1980 as a branch of the Regional Museum in Suwałki; since the administrative reform it has been run by Pisz County.

Works written in the lodge include "Kronika olsztyńska", "Niobe", "Wit Stwosz", "Chryzostoma Bulwiecia podróż do Ciemnogrodu", "Rozmowa liryczna", "Spotkanie z matką", "Księżyc", "W leśniczówce", "Chmiel na rogach jelenich" and "Ojczyzna". Many of these poems describe real places around the house that you can still find on a walk.

What to see

• Permanent exhibition from 2023 – the poet's life, his stays in Masuria, his theatre work, music in and for his poems, and his bond with Natalia. It is built around Gałczyński's original belongings, and multimedia let you hear his voice and music set to his poems.
• Sound stations outside the building that extend the story.
• Collection of Masurian artists – drawings by Andrzej Strumiłło from 1948–1953 and furniture by the writer Igor Newerly, some from his workshop in the village of Zgon.
• Nature trail of the Maskulińskie Forest District – a 1,400 m loop (about 40 minutes) past the lodge and along the lake shore, a route the poet walked himself.
• Obelisk at "Gałczyński's pine" – the tree the poet nicknamed "George Bernard Shaw" was felled in 1983; a marked 1.5 km path leads to the stone.

Curious facts

The Gałczyńskis gave their own names to places around Pranie. Treasure Island, their favourite islet on Lake Nidzkie, is really Czapla Island, and Sunny Bay, where the family swam, is properly called the Buda log landing. Kira Gałczyńska remembered that they rarely went into Ruciane-Nida – only for candles, paraffin and matches – and that her father befriended a post-office clerk named Agafon. In 2003 the lodge won a "Gazeta Wyborcza" readers' poll for the favourite cultural venue in Warmia and Masuria.

Tripto tips

From May to August the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00; in September and October Wednesday to Sunday; winter hours are shorter (as of October 2026). A standard ticket costs PLN 18, reduced PLN 12, and entry to the grounds only is PLN 5. Free forest parking is 150 m away next to the Zielona Gęś bistro; dogs and bicycles are not allowed on site. Allow 1.5–2 hours including a walk, and on July and August weekends check the "Muzyka u Gałczyńskiego" concert programme – on concert days the museum may close earlier.
