Gałczyński Museum in Ruciane-Nida

In the heart of the Piska Forest, on Lake Nidzkie, stands the wooden Pranie forester's lodge built in 1880 — the house where Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński wrote some of his more important poems. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the poet, a venue for literary meetings and concerts in a Masurian setting.

The poet among the pines

The lodge took its name from the meadow it overlooks: "prała" meant the mist gathering over it. Gałczyński stayed here with his family at forester Stanisław Popowski, and in Pranie he wrote, among others, "The Olsztyn Chronicle", "Niobe", "Lyric Conversation", "The Moon", "Hops on the Antlers of a Deer" and "Homeland". The museum opened in 1980; inside you can see mementoes of the poet's stays in Pranie as well as objects from his Warsaw flat — manuscripts, drawings, photographs and the archival magazines he wrote for.

Following Gałczyński's footsteps

Around the lodge run trails to places connected with the poet: Wyspa Skarbów (Treasure Island) — his favourite islet on the lake — and Sunny Bay, where the family swam. The Wańkowicz canoe trail passes here. The lodge hosts concerts, exhibitions and literary meetings, and each year the National Recitation Contest named after Gałczyński. In Ruciane-Nida stands the poet's bust by the sculptress Balbina Świtycz-Widacka.
