Kayaking the Krutynia River

Kayaking the Krutynia River (say "kroo-TIN-ya") is one of the classic things to do in Masuria, Poland's lake district. The canoe trail runs for more than 100 km (60+ miles) from Sorkwity to Ruciane-Nida, linking a string of glacial lakes with a clear, slow river through the Pisz Forest and the Masurian Landscape Park. The park itself calls it the most beautiful canoe route in the country. You can paddle the whole thing in about a week or pick a gentle half-day stretch from the village of Krutyń.

The river and the trail

The river is 99 km long with a catchment of about 640 km², and flows into Lake Bełdany at Iznota. Sources differ: 91 km or "over 100 km" according to the park, depending on where you start. The river is typically 30–40 m wide and 1.5–7 m deep, with a slow current and many meanders. Before 1945 this was East Prussia, and the river was known in German as the Kruttinna; Polish writer Melchior Wańkowicz described it in a 1936 travel book.

Stages of the Krutynia canoe trail

Most paddlers start in Sorkwity and cross several lakes to Spychowo. From there the park describes five stages:

1. Spychowo – Zgon: small lakes and a bird reserve; watch for stones at low water.
2. Zgon – Krutyń: about 8 km across Lake Mokre, the deepest on the route (51 m), then a short portage over a wooden walkway at a weir.
3. Krutyń – Ukta: the most popular day trip, with a 19th-century mill at Zielony Lasek and a 70 m portage, then fast, shallow water over stones.
4. Ukta – Iznota: the "Little Amazon" – twisting channels, fallen trees and marshy banks – before Lake Gardyńskie.
5. Iznota – Ruciane-Nida: busy Lake Bełdany, the Guzianka lock and Lake Nidzkie.

Daily stages are usually 10–20 km, so the full trail takes about a week.

Krutyń and the punted boats

The village of Krutyń (German: Kruttinnen) grew up around 1500 near a hunting lodge of the Teutonic Order's Grand Master; between the wars it was a summer resort, and John Steinbeck vacationed here in 1963. Today it is home to the park headquarters and a nature education center. From the landing, traditional wooden boats are pushed upstream with a pole – a relaxing option if you don't want to paddle. A 2.4 km nature trail follows the river; look for kingfishers and stones covered in a rare red freshwater alga.

Highlights along the way

• Ukta has a Neo-Gothic church from 1845 and the ruins of a late-19th-century railroad bridge by the river.
• The "Królewska Sosna" (Royal Pine) reserve protects about 97 ha of old forest on Lake Mokre.
• Next to the Guzianka lock stands a bunker from 1900, part of Prussian defenses known as the Masurian Lakes Line.
• Lake Nidzkie is a nature reserve with a quiet zone and 11 islands. On its shore, the forester's lodge at Pranie is now a museum of poet Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, with concerts and readings in summer.
• At the end of the trail, Ruciane-Nida has a train station and lakeside guesthouses.

Rules and safety

• A quiet zone covers the entire Krutynia basin.
• Camping is allowed only at designated sites.
• Wind can whip up waves on Lake Mokre; on Lake Bełdany, keep close to the right bank because of motorboats.
• Take care at the Guzianka lock (about 20 minutes per cycle).

When to go

The best time is May to September. July and August are busiest, especially between Krutyń and Ukta; June and September are calmer. Rentals are seasonal, and from late fall through winter there is practically no kayak hire; the Guzianka lock also runs on reduced, weekday-only hours after the season. Prices depend on the operator and stage, so contact local outfitters in Krutyń, Ukta or Sorkwity directly.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely, if you enjoy nature. Short stretches suit families with children who can swim; the full route demands several days of steady paddling and some open-water crossings. Always wear a life jacket.

How to get to Krutyń

Krutyń is in the municipality of Piecki, about 20 km from Mikołajki and close to Mrągowo. From Warsaw it is roughly 250 km (155 miles) by car; the nearest airport is Olsztyn-Mazury in Szymany. Outfitters usually shuttle you and your kayak back from the finish.
