Landscape parks
Krutyń, Warmian-Masurian
The Masurian Landscape Park (Mazurski Park Krajobrazowy) protects more than 560 km² (215 square miles) of forest, glacial lakes and old villages in the heart of Poland's Masurian Lake District, between the resort towns of Mikołajki, Mrągowo and Ruciane-Nida. It takes in Lake Śniardwy, Poland's largest lake, the northern Pisz Forest and the Krutynia River, the country's most famous canoe trail. If you are looking for things to do in Masuria beyond marinas and beer gardens, this is where to go.
According to the park administration:
More than 90% of the park lies within the UNESCO "Masurian Lakes" biosphere reserve. Founded in 1977, it is the oldest landscape park in the region. Plans for a Masurian National Park were drafted in the early 1990s but have never been implemented.
A note for first-time visitors: a Polish "landscape park" is not a fenced park with gates. It is a protected area where people live, farm and vacation, so there is no entrance fee and no opening hours.
The park maintains over 150 km of nature trails and bike routes, including the 7.3 km Łuknajno trail and a 2.4 km riverside walk through the Krutynia reserve. A quiet zone applies across the Krutynia basin, and camping is allowed only at designated sites. A free park app with route maps is available for Android and iOS.
Families will find short, flat educational trails and storks at Krutyń; paddlers, cyclists and bird-watchers will want several days. To enjoy the quiet side of Masuria, stay in a small forest village rather than in the busy resort centers, and spread your visit over two or three days – one for the Krutynia, one for Lake Śniardwy and Łuknajno, and one for cycling. Is it worth visiting? If you like nature more than nightlife, absolutely.
The park is open year-round and free (as of October 2026). Kayak and boat rentals are seasonal, mostly from late spring to early fall, so in winter plan on walks, bird-watching and cozy guesthouses instead. Fall colors in the Pisz Forest are spectacular.
The park headquarters is at Krutyń 66, 11-710 Piecki (phone +48 89 742 14 05). From Warsaw it is about 250–280 km (155–175 miles) by car to the park's lake towns; the nearest airport is Olsztyn-Mazury in Szymany. Gdańsk is roughly 250 km away.
