Wolf's Lair

The Wolf's Lair (Polish: Wilczy Szaniec, German: Wolfsschanze) near the village of Gierłoż (say "GYER-wosh") in north-eastern Poland is what remains of Adolf Hitler's main military headquarters during World War II. Spread over some 250 hectares of forest, its giant concrete bunkers were blown up in 1945 and now lie cracked and moss-covered among the trees. It was here, on 20 July 1944, that Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg tried and failed to kill Hitler.

History

Construction started in autumn 1940 in deep forest near the East Prussian town of Rastenburg (now Kętrzyn). The site was chosen for its closeness to the Soviet border, the existing fortifications of East Prussia and dense woodland that hid everything from the air. According to the operator, around 200 structures were built on 250 hectares: massive shelters, barracks, guardhouses and technical buildings. Other sources count about 80 permanent buildings and about 100 wooden barracks. The complex had its own airfields, railway station, cinema and telephone network, with three security zones surrounded by minefields.

Hitler arrived on 24 June 1941, two days after Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and spent more than 800 days here in total. On 20 July 1944 Stauffenberg left a briefcase bomb in the briefing hut; Hitler survived, and the plot was followed by mass arrests and executions. Hitler left the Wolf's Lair on 20 November 1944. On the night of 24–25 January 1945, German engineers blew up the bunkers ahead of the advancing Red Army. Demining the area took years after the war, and the site opened to visitors in 1959.

What to see

Marked trails lead between the ruins. The most striking sights are the shattered blocks of reinforced concrete, tilted roofs and walls several meters thick, now overgrown with moss. Numbered signs identify individual buildings, including Hitler's own bunker. The site of the briefing hut where the bomb exploded is marked with a memorial plaque to Stauffenberg. Do not climb into or onto the ruins – stay on the paths.

Plan 2–3 hours. Options:

• Local guides – contacts on the official website.
• On your own – with a site plan or guidebook from the gift shop.

The forest paths are uneven; in summer bring insect repellent.

Is the Wolf's Lair worth visiting?

For anyone interested in World War II history, yes. It is not a polished museum but an evocative ruin in a forest, best visited with an audio guide for context. It may be too heavy for small children.

Open every day of the year, including holidays:

• 1 October – 28 February: 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
• March and September: 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
• April: 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
• May–August: 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

Tickets from 1 January 2026: 30 PLN (reduced 25 PLN) from April to October, 25 PLN (reduced 20 PLN) from November to March; children under 6 free. Off season, the indoor exhibitions are closed. Tickets are sold on site only (cash or card at the entrance gate); there is no online booking.

How to get to the Wolf's Lair

The address is Gierłoż 5, 11-400 Kętrzyn, about 8 km east of Kętrzyn. By car it is roughly 250 km from Warsaw and about 20 km from Giżycko. Public transport is limited, so most visitors drive or join a tour. Parking costs 15 PLN per car; bicycles and fully electric cars park free.

Facilities and accessibility

The visitor center has toilets, a café, a baby-changing room and a shop, and the operator describes the site as accessible to people with disabilities. Accommodation and a campsite are available on site, and there is a bike repair station for cyclists. Remember that this is a place of remembrance: behave respectfully and keep children close to the marked paths.

Best time to visit

Summer has the longest hours but also the biggest crowds. Autumn and winter are quieter; from October the site closes at 4 p.m., so arrive in the morning. Remember that the indoor exhibitions are closed from November to March.

Nearby

The Mamerki bunkers, headquarters of the German Army High Command, are about 18 km north-east and survived intact. Boyen Fortress and the swing bridge in Giżycko make a good second stop.
