St George's Basilica in Kętrzyn

St. George's Basilica in Kętrzyn (say KENT-shin) is one of the best-preserved fortified churches in Masuria, the lake district of northeastern Poland. Its red-brick Gothic walls once formed part of the town's medieval defenses, and the building still looks almost like a castle. Inside, you'll find spectacular "crystal" vaults from 1515 and a chancel set noticeably off-axis. It stands right next to Kętrzyn's Teutonic Order castle and makes an easy stop on the way to the Wolf's Lair.

Where it is

Kętrzyn — the former East Prussian town of Rastenburg — lies about 90 km (56 miles) northeast of Olsztyn, roughly a 3.5–4-hour drive from Warsaw or Gdańsk. The town has rail connections, and the basilica is at Zamkowa 5 in the center. Hitler's former headquarters, the Wolf's Lair at Gierłoż, is about 8 km (5 miles) east.

History

Construction began in 1359 on the site of a former watchtower. The single-nave church gained defensive galleries and a tower, then a second tower, and around the end of the 15th century became a three-aisled pseudo-basilica. After a fire in 1500, the rebuilt chancel ended up out of line with the nave. In 1515 Master Matz of Gdańsk created the crystal vaults.

For centuries this was a Lutheran church. After the German population was expelled in 1945, a Lutheran congregation still used it briefly, and in 1946 the Communist authorities handed it to the Catholic Church. It became a Marian shrine and collegiate church in 1992, and Pope John Paul II named it a minor basilica in 1999.

What to see

• Crystal vaults — sharp, faceted vaulting typical of late Gothic in the Baltic region.
• The crooked chancel — stand by the entrance and look toward the altar.
• A 16th-century pulpit painted with portraits including Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, a reminder of the church's Protestant past.
• The organ, continuing the tradition of Josue Mosengel's 1721 instrument (the current organ, from 1975, has 43 stops).
• The 1597 epitaph of Christoph Schenk von Tautenburg, a medieval prison cell under the tall tower, and a lapidarium of old gravestones between the walls.

Visiting tips

The basilica is an active parish church and entry is free. As of October 2026, weekday Masses are at 6:30 am, 7 am and 6 pm, and Sunday Masses at 6:30, 8:30, 10 and 11:30 am, 1 pm and 6 pm; avoid sightseeing during services. The parish doesn't publish separate visiting hours or details on access to the prison cell — call the parish office (+48 89 752 45 35) if it matters. Information is in Polish. Allow 45–60 minutes. Start outside: from the castle side you can see how the church walls doubled as town fortifications. Inside, look up first — the vaults look best on a sunny day.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially combined with the castle next door (home to the regional museum), the Wolf's Lair and the Baroque pilgrimage church at Święta Lipka nearby.
