The Collegiate Basilica of St George in Kętrzyn is one of the best-preserved fortified churches in Masuria. Its massive walls formed part of the town’s medieval defences, giving the building an unusual, almost fortress-like character.
Construction began in 1359 and the first phase was completed in the early 15th century. Between 1470 and 1475 the original single-nave church was enlarged into a three-aisle basilica. After a fire around 1500, a presbytery and sacristy were added, and in 1515 Master Matz of Gdańsk created the valuable crystal vaults. For centuries the church served Protestant communities; Catholics regained it after the Second World War.
The building’s most surprising detail appears in its axis: the presbytery is set at an angle to the nave. This resulted from rebuilding after the fire and is a rare architectural feature. Inside, look for the crystal vaults of 1515, the Mannerist pulpit from 1594, the 1721 organ by Josue Mosengel and surviving elements of the former furnishings. Medieval prison cells survive at the base of the tower, while a parish museum room occupies the gallery above the sacristy.
The basilica houses the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy and received the title of minor basilica in 1999. It is at 5 Zamkowa Street in Kętrzyn and remains an active parish church. Check current services and access to the cells and museum room before visiting; allow 45–60 minutes for the basilica.
