Presidential Castle in Wisła

The Presidential Castle in Wisła ("VEES-wah") is a modernist mountain residence built in 1929–1931 as a gift from the people of Silesia to Polish President Ignacy Mościcki. Its towers deliberately echo a medieval castle, while the interiors are a rare, well-preserved showcase of interwar Art Deco design. Still officially a residence of Poland's presidents, it can be toured for free on guided visits — but only if you book at least a week ahead.

Where it is and how to get there

The castle stands on the wooded slope of Zadni Groń in Wisła Czarne, a district of the resort town of Wisła in the Silesian Beskids, southern Poland. It overlooks Lake Czerniańskie, where the White and Black Vistula streams meet to form Poland's longest river. Wisła is about 100 km (roughly 1.5 hours) by car from Katowice and about 150 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Kraków. The address is Zameczek 1, 43-460 Wisła.

History

A larch-wood hunting lodge built for Archduke Friedrich of Habsburg in 1906–1907 originally stood here. After 1918 the Polish state took it over, and in 1927 the Silesian authorities had it refurbished for the president — only for it to burn down on the night of December 23–24, 1927, in circumstances never explained. A small wooden chapel from 1909 survived.

The new residence was championed by the Silesian governor Michał Grażyński and designed free of charge by architect Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz, with interiors by Andrzej Pronaszko and Włodzimierz Padlewski. It was handed over on January 15, 1931. The original flat roofs couldn't cope with mountain winters, so steep copper roofs were added in 1938.

During World War II the Nazi SS controlled the building. After the war it served communist-era officials as a government retreat and, from 1981, as a coal mine's holiday home. In 2002 it returned to the Chancellery of the President, and after restoration in 2003–2005 President Aleksander Kwaśniewski reopened it. The complex is a listed heritage site.

What you'll see on the tour

The complex includes the Upper Castle (the presidential residence itself), the Lower Castle (conference rooms and guest rooms), a former forester's lodge with a restaurant, and the Chapel of St. Hedwig of Silesia. Highlights inside include:

• The Pronaszko Salon, a glazed veranda facing the Barania Góra range, with a unique set of chrome tubular-steel furniture and original Art Deco chandeliers.
• The dining room, with an Art Deco table for 16 and paintings on loan from the National Museum in Warsaw.
• The hunting room, displaying shotguns and photos of Mościcki on the hunt.
• The president's study and a bathroom with the original 1930s tub and fittings.
• The 1909 Tyrolean-style chapel, with a 17th-century altar and gifts from successive presidential couples.

Tickets, hours and booking

As of October 2026, according to the residence's official website:

• Free guided tours run Wednesday to Saturday at 11 am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm; no tours on Sundays or public holidays. Paid tours on other days may be arranged with reception.
• Groups are limited to 20 people.
• Book at least 7 days in advance by phone (+48 33 854 65 00) or email (zamekwisla@zamekwisla.pl). Foreign visitors must provide their date of birth, ID or passport number and type, and nationality.
• Bring the same ID on the day; the residence may refuse or reschedule visits.

The website doesn't mention tours in other languages, so ask when booking whether an English-speaking guide is available.

Staying overnight

You can sleep here: rooms in the Lower Castle and the lodge start at PLN 340 per night for a double with breakfast, with apartments from PLN 440. There's a restaurant, sauna, gym and mountain bike rental.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you're interested in 20th-century design or Polish history — and you plan ahead. Spontaneous visitors can only see the building from outside.
