Malinka

The Adam Małysz Ski Jump in Wisła-Malinka is one of only two large ski jumps in Poland, alongside Wielka Krokiew in Zakopane. Construction point K120, hill size HS 134, stands for 8,000 spectators and World Cup competitions every year. The home hill of Poland's most famous ski jumper bears his name for a reason: Małysz comes from Wisła.

From a wooden jump in 1933

The first, wooden jump in Malinka was built in 1932–1933 under the direction of Rudolf Kowal; the first record holder, Mieczysław Kozdruń, landed after 41 metres. From 1958 the hill hosted the prestigious Puchar Beskidów competitions, and in 1970 it was enlarged to K105 with a steel tower. The record of the old Malinka belonged to Tadeusz Fijas (102.5 m), and the last competition — the Polish Championships — took place on 28 February 2001.

A build that nearly failed

Riding the wave of Małysz's success, a new K120 jump was planned from scratch: the foundation act was signed by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski and work began in the winter of 2004. In 2006 the slope collapsed — experts from AGH concluded the designers had wrongly assumed solid rock instead of unstable shale. The venue was only finished in the summer of 2008, at a cost of PLN 48 million. Małysz himself made the first jump on 17 September 2008, and during the Polish Championships that September the hill received his name.

World Cup and new records

The World Cup has visited Malinka since 9 January 2013 — the first competition was won by Norway's Anders Bardal — and returns every year. In 2017, frozen inrun tracks were installed so competitions can be held in above-freezing temperatures. A subsequent renovation (costing PLN 53 million) changed the hill's profile, so the FIS reset the record: the new record holder is Andreas Wellinger (144.5 m).

Practical tips

The venue operates all year: in summer jumpers land on plastic matting, in winter the frozen tracks and floodlights take over, and a chairlift climbs the hill. Arrive early for World Cup events — the stands fill up long before the start. In summer, the area around Malinka offers running trails and a lift up Czupel.
