Waterfalls
Międzygórze, Lower Silesian
Wilczka Waterfall (Wodospad Wilczki, roughly "VEELCH-kee") in the mountain village of Międzygórze is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the Polish Sudetes. The Wilczka stream drops 22 meters over a rock ledge into a deep pool and then rushes through a narrow gorge. It is described as the second-highest waterfall in the Polish Sudetes after Kamieńczyk Falls, and it sits just a few minutes' walk from a parking lot.
Międzygórze lies in the Śnieżnik Massif in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland, close to the Czech border. From Wrocław (the nearest major city and airport) it is about a 2-hour drive; Kłodzko, the regional hub, is about 40 minutes away. Before 1945 the area was German, and the village was known as Wölfelsgrund – a popular 19th-century resort.
The first known description of the falls dates from 1781. Around 1830 the ledge was artificially raised, and older guides quoted a height of up to 27 m; the 1997 flood exposed the added section, and today's height is about 22 m. In the 19th century Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, who owned estates here, had a romantic park laid out above the falls, and visitors paid to use the stairs and footbridges.
Since 1958 the falls and gorge have been a nature reserve (about 2.75 ha) protecting beech-fir forest, mosses and liverworts. The gorge is around 200 m long, 10–18 m deep and only about 3 m wide.
It is about 100 m from the roadside parking to the bridge, and 20–30 minutes is enough for the falls. Paths use stone steps and terraces, so access with strollers or wheelchairs is limited, and they can be slippery after rain or in winter. Entry to the reserve is free (as of October 2026). It is an easy outing with children, but keep little ones close at the railings above the gorge. Flow is strongest in spring and after heavy rain. Signs are in Polish; bring some cash in złoty (PLN) for parking and cafés.
In summer the gorge stays pleasantly cool, autumn turns the beech trees gold, and after dark the illuminated falls make a nice evening stroll if you are staying in the village.
The red-marked Main Sudetes Trail passes just above the falls – west to Mount Igliczna with the Maria Śnieżna pilgrimage church, east to the Na Śnieżniku mountain hut below Śnieżnik peak. Międzygórze itself is known for its wooden villas in Norwegian and Tyrolean style, and the Bear Cave (Jaskinia Niedźwiedzia) in Kletno is a short drive away.
Is it worth visiting? Yes – it is quick, free and one of the most photogenic natural sights in the Kłodzko region.
