Kletno Uranium Mine

The Kletno Uranium Mine is an underground educational route in adit no. 18 on the northern slope of Żmijowiec in the Śnieżnik Massif. The visit explains uranium mining, which took place here from 1948 to 1953, as well as the area’s much older mining traditions. The visitor section is about 400 metres long, while the former mine once contained more than 37 kilometres of workings.

Minerals and mining history

The route passes colourful tunnels with local fluorite, amethyst, quartz, barite and malachite. Displays also include historic maps, lamps and mining equipment. The story goes beyond uranium: it explains how iron, silver and copper were mined earlier in the Kleśnica Valley, while the geology section introduces the processes that shaped the Śnieżnik Massif.

What the visit is like

Entry is only possible with a guide, in groups of up to 25 people. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and the underground temperature stays close to 7°C all year. The operator states that the adit is safe in terms of radioactive radiation. Audioguides are available for English-, German- and Czech-speaking visitors.

Practical information

Bring a jacket or warm fleece and closed, comfortable shoes. Free parking is available by the mine, and animals are not allowed on the underground route. Capacity is limited; only buying a ticket online in advance guarantees entry at the selected time. Check current opening hours, prices and availability before travelling, because extras such as night visits and geology workshops may follow a separate schedule.
