Franciscan Church in Kłodzko

The Franciscan Church in Kłodzko and its monastery form a Baroque complex on Piasek Island, just beyond the Gothic bridge. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the adjoining buildings are among Kłodzko’s most distinctive landmarks. They fit naturally into a walk between the fortress, market square and Młynówka waterfront, but the monastic area is not an ordinary museum.

A Baroque church

Franciscans were present in Kłodzko as early as the 13th century. Construction of the present church began in 1628, while the monastery acquired its Baroque form in 1731. The three-aisled basilica is about 30 metres long, with a barrel vault in the nave and octagonal chapels. A façade with niches, a rosette portal and two towers topped by onion domes makes it a distinctive feature of the island.

Monastery, frescoes and history

The former refectory preserves frescoes attributed to Scheffler, and the monastery once housed the town’s first printing house. The complex has repeatedly been exposed to flooding, so the rooms available to visitors may depend on works and current use. Its interest is architectural, religious and historical at the same time.

Practical information

The church stands at 1 Franciszkański Square, about 100 metres from the Gothic bridge and 300 metres from the fortress. Visit the church outside services; contact the Franciscans before planning access to the monastery or refectory, as tours are held on selected dates. Allow 30–45 minutes for the complex and the approach across Piasek Island.
