Franciscan Church (Church of Our Lady of the Rosary) in Kłodzko

Cross the Gothic bridge over the Młynówka and two towers with onion domes rise ahead – the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary with its Franciscan friary, the main landmark of Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek). The church stands on an island between the Młynówka and the Nysa Kłodzka, and that location has shaped its fate for centuries: floods have swept through it many times, most recently in September 2024. Paradoxically, that very flood revealed something nobody had seen for a long time.

History: an order that kept coming back

The Franciscans arrived in Kłodzko around 1250, and by 1257 a chapel stood here where the faithful could gain an indulgence. During the Hussite Wars, in 1427, the friars left Piasek, which lay outside the town walls; they returned before 1475, only to lose the friary to the town again in the early 16th century. In 1619, during the Thirty Years' War, the buildings were confiscated and turned into a printing house and a German Protestant school. After imperial troops took the town, the Franciscans got their property back.

The present church was completed in shell form in 1628–1631, but fitting it out dragged on until 1697. The friary was built between 1678 and 1731. After secularisation in 1810 the church became a garrison church and the friary a military hospital; the Franciscans returned in 1945. Major floods hit in 1783, 1938, 1997 and 2024 – in 1997 they destroyed the furnishings, whose restoration lasted until 2010.

Did you know: niches under the plaster

After the 2024 flood, when the water here rose about three metres, the damp plaster had to be stripped. Behind later brickwork, 30 niches came to light, painted with a repeating chalice motif and topped by carved shells in earthy colours. They were probably walled up after 1810, when the army took over the church. On the conservator's recommendation they are to be restored and put on display.

What to see

• The twin-towered façade – three storeys with pilasters and onion domes; best seen from the Gothic bridge and from Wita Stwosza Street.
• The interior – a basilica about 30 m long, the nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, with four octagonal chapels on each side. Altars and paintings date from the 19th century and form a cycle of the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, crowned by the high altar of the Coronation of the Virgin.
• The friary refectory, 10 × 18 m, with frescoes by Felix Anton Scheffler from 1744 showing the apotheosis of the order. It lies within the enclosure and is not normally open.

The church is at Plac Franciszkański 1. Mass is held on weekdays at 6:30, 9:00 and 18:30, on Sundays at 6:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:00 and 19:00 (as of October 2026); visit outside services. There are no official opening hours or tickets, and post-flood drying and conservation are ongoing, so parts of the interior may be under repair. You can ask about the refectory at the friary (tel. +48 74 867 28 30). Allow 20–30 minutes for the outside and inside. From here the Gothic bridge leads to the Market Square, the Church of the Assumption and Kłodzko Fortress.
