The Kłodzko Underground Tourist Route

Six hundred metres of corridors run beneath the old town of Kłodzko at the foot of the fortress, dug by the town's inhabitants since the 13th century. The underground served as goods warehouses and craft workshops, the famous Kłodzko beer matured in its cellars, and during enemy attacks it became a shelter. Today it is one of the most interesting underground routes in Lower Silesia.

What the Kłodzko cellars hide

The route leads through interiors arranged as they looked over the centuries: life-size mannequins in medieval dress, the fittings of a bakery, a merchant's counting house, a tavern, a dungeon and a laundry, and even a small ammunition store. In the section devoted to justice you will see replicas of torture instruments, shackles, stocks and an executioner's axe, while multimedia stations with a voice-over tell the story of executioners. Kłodzko had its own executioner, "rented out" to other towns — Krzysztof Kuhn went down in history for erecting a monument to his late wife in Otmuchów.

Practical information

The entrance is in the pavilion at Czeska Street, where the tourist information office is also located; the route is one-way and ends at Zawiszy Czarnego Street, next to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Visiting is self-guided. Numerous stairs make the route unsuitable for strollers and difficult for visitors with limited mobility.
