The Windmill in Ożarów

In Ożarów near Wieluń, precisely in Kocilew, stands a wooden post mill. The present building was erected by the Kowalski family in 1914, on the site of an older 19th-century mill. The sails sweep a circle about 17 metres in diameter — visible from afar against the open landscape of the Wieluń land.

The last miller of Ożarów

The mill was a private business, which did not make life easy after 1945. Henryk Kowalski, son of Roman and the last miller in Ożarów, ran it despite constant obstruction by the local authorities, until in 1960 he was banned from grinding grain into flour. The closed mill then served as a warehouse and fell into ruin: the sails were removed, the roof collapsed, and damage spread inside.

Rescue and reconstruction

When by 1996 only a ruin remained, the rescue was initiated by the Museum of Manor Interiors in Ożarów. Witold Kowalski handed the structure over on the condition that it would not be moved and that after reconstruction it would be opened to visitors with an educational role. The work was completed in 2006. Today the mill can be visited on weekdays after a phone reservation; it stands about 1 km from the manor in Ożarów that houses the museum.
