Wieluń Land Museum

The Wieluń Land Museum in Wieluń (VYEH-loon) tells the story of the small Polish town that German dive bombers attacked at dawn on September 1, 1939, the first morning of World War II. Housed in a restored 17th-century convent beside the old town walls, it combines a moving exhibition on the bombing with archaeology and rural folk culture. For anyone interested in how the war began, it is the essential stop in town.

Where it is

Wieluń lies in central Poland's Łódź Province, roughly 90 km southwest of Łódź and about 110 km northeast of Wrocław as the crow flies. Częstochowa is about 60 km to the southeast. The museum is at 13 Narutowicza Street, a short walk from the collegiate church and the surviving fragments of the medieval fortifications. Most visitors arrive by car; regional buses and trains also serve the town.

Why Wieluń matters

Early on September 1, 1939, Ju 87 Stuka dive bombers hit the town, which had no military targets. Historians still debate the exact time and the death toll, but around 70–75% of the town was destroyed, including the hospital, the synagogue and the Gothic church of St. Michael. Many Poles regard the raid as the opening act of the war, and Polish historians have called it the "Polish Guernica." The museum's permanent exhibition "Witnesses Speak… Wieluń, September 1, 1939" presents artifacts and photographs documenting the attack and its aftermath.

The museum and its building

The museum opened on October 10, 1926, lost its entire collection during the war, and was revived in 1964. It occupies a former convent of the Bernardine nuns built in 1613–1615, founded by Anna Koniecpolska, mother of the famous 17th-century military commander Stanisław Koniecpolski. Over the centuries the building served as a cloth factory, Russian army barracks, a movie theater and a German carpentry workshop, before being rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1964–1969.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026 (prices in Polish złoty, PLN):

• Main building: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9 am–4 pm; Tuesday and Friday 9 am–5 pm; Saturday 9 am–4 pm (November–March: Saturdays for pre-booked groups only); Sunday 11 am–5 pm. Last entry 30 minutes before closing. Closed October 10, 2026.
• Tickets: regular PLN 15, reduced PLN 8, family PLN 40. Entry to the exhibitions is free on Sundays.
• Męczarnia Tower: Monday–Friday 9 am–3 pm, tickets PLN 7 / PLN 5, bought at the museum.

Planning your visit

Allow about 90 minutes for the main building, or half a day if you add the medieval Męczarnia Tower, part of the town walls, with its exhibition on the town executioner and historic weapons. The museum also runs the Manor House Interiors Museum in Ożarów, a late-Baroque manor with four corner pavilions, and a reconstructed windmill in Kocilew — both worth a detour by car.

Yes, if you are tracing the history of World War II in Poland: few places convey so directly how the war began for civilians.
