Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Gaszyn

The Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Gaszyn is a 16th-century wooden church belonging to the historic Wieluń group. It stands about 3 km south of Wieluń, beside the old route towards Bolesławiec. It fits naturally into a route linking the historic churches of the Wieluń land.

A larch-wood structure and tower

The church retains an archaic layout: a rectangular nave, a shorter and narrower presbytery closed by a straight wall, and one shared roof ridge. It was built as a larch log structure on a brick foundation. The adjoining tower probably dates from the 17th century, and both roofs are covered with wooden shingles.

The altar and the changing dedication

Until 1683 the building was the chapel of St Sigismund, King and Martyr. After it became a filial church, its dedication changed; the foundation of the altar and image of the Virgin is linked with a tradition of thanksgiving for a safe return from the relief of Vienna. The interior preserves a late-Renaissance and Baroque main altar with the Virgin and Child, sculptures of St Stanislaus and St Adalbert, and the 1672 coffin plate of Jakub Gaszyński.

Practical information

Gaszyn is an active parish, so there is no confirmed regular tourist timetable. For the interior, contact the parish in advance and avoid Mass times; the parish office is open Tuesday to Friday before services. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for the stop. Nearby churches in Kadłub, Grębień and Popowice make it possible to plan a one-day wooden-church route.
