St Anne's Pilgrimage Church in Olesno

The pine trunk behind glass by the high altar bears a plaque dated "July 1444": under this tree, legend says, a girl was saved from robbers through the intercession of St Anne. A wooden church grew up around the pine, and in the 17th century it gained an extraordinary central section — five chapels arranged in the shape of a rose. Hence its nickname, "the Olesno rose cast in wood", and since 2018 its status as a Monument of History.

History: from a chapel by a pine to a sanctuary

The legend tells of a girl named Anna, saved through the intercession of Christ's grandmother, whose image Duchess St Hedwig is said to have hung on a tall pine. As early as 1444 a small wooden chapel the size of today's chancel was built around the tree; the pine's top and branches were cut off, and its trunk still supports the high altar. Pilgrims from Silesia, Poland, Bohemia and Moravia no longer fitted inside, so in 1518 a larger church was built and consecrated by Bishop Jan Thurzo of Wrocław.

Another wave of pilgrims led the carpenter Marcin Snopek to add the star-shaped central section in 1668–1670; the parish gives 1669–1670. A sacristy followed in 1707. Major renovations took place in 1873 and 1904, and in 2000 the five chapels were restored to their original state. In 1945 the church sheltered Olesno's residents from Red Army soldiers.

The Olesno rose

The oldest, medieval part is like the roots, from which an eleven-metre passage — the stem — leads to five petal-chapels. The layout echoes Olesno's coat of arms, which shows half a rose, and the town's German name Rosenberg, "Rose Hill", recorded from the early 14th century. According to the parish, no other church in Poland or Europe has the same arrangement. Going clockwise, you pass the chapels of St Anne, the Exaltation of the Cross, the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the Assumption and Our Lady of Częstochowa.

What to see

• The trunk of the miraculous pine behind glass by the high altar, with a plaque recalling 1444.
• The late-Gothic figure of St Anne with the Virgin and Child from around 1500, known as St Anne of Olesno — the sanctuary's holiest object.
• A copy of the "Great Holy Family" triptych from the early 16th century, the work of Master Jakub, a follower of Veit Stoss. The original carvings were stolen on the night of 19–20 August 1994.
• Late-Gothic paintings of the Apostles uncovered during restoration.
• Quatrefoil windows, a shingled roof and a bell turret with an onion cap.

Tripto tips

The church stands about 2 km from Olesno town centre on the road to Wieluń and is a chapel of Corpus Christi parish. It is an active sanctuary, so the interior is opened mainly for services — it is liveliest during the St Anne's feast, which the parish calls the beating heart of the community. Outside services, ask the parish about access. Next to the church is a cemetery with a neo-Gothic funeral chapel from around 1900. Allow 30–45 minutes to walk around the church and take in the chapels.
