Lakes
Turawa, Opole
Lake Turawa (Jezioro Turawskie, roughly "too-RAHV-skyeh") is the largest body of water in Poland's Opole region: a reservoir of about 21 km² (8 sq miles) on the Mała Panew River, ringed by pine forest, sandy beaches and holiday resorts. Lying some 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Opole, it is the region's go-to summer spot for swimming, sailing and kitesurfing, and a protected Natura 2000 bird area that draws birdwatchers in spring and fall.
The lake sits in the Turawa municipality of Upper Silesia, about 25–30 minutes by car from Opole. Opole itself is roughly 100 km (an hour on the A4 motorway) from Wrocław and about the same from Katowice, the two nearest international airports. Resorts, beaches and parking areas are spread around the shore near the villages of Turawa, Kotórz and Szczedrzyk. A car is by far the easiest way to get around.
The reservoir was built in 1933–1939, when this region was part of Germany, as the Turawa-Stausee – to regulate water levels on the Oder River and, from the start, to provide recreation. Several villages and hamlets were flooded and dozens of families were resettled. The 13-meter dam holds back up to 107.6 million m³ of water; the lake is up to 13 m deep but averages only about 5 m. A small 1.2 MW hydropower plant runs at the outflow.
Next to the main reservoir are the smaller Middle and Small Lakes, created by gravel digging for the dam; Middle Lake has a promenade, playgrounds and a pier. About 2 km away, Silver Lake (Jezioro Srebrne) covers 12 ha and is up to 17 m deep.
The 2026 swimming season ended on September 1. Outside summer most bars and rental shops close, there are no lifeguards, and the water level is often much lower, leaving wide sandy shores. Access to the lakeshore is free year-round, though resort parking lots may charge in season. In winter the area is used for cross-country skiing, but never walk on the ice – water levels in the reservoir change. Before a summer swim, check the local sanitary authority's water-quality notices.
If you are in Opole in summer and want a beach day, yes. Off-season, it is a peaceful place for a walk, a bike ride or birdwatching. Plan half a day for a walk or ride, a full day for a beach visit.
