Krakow Gate in Wielun

The Krakow Gate in Wieluń is the town’s only city gate preserved in its entirety and one of its main symbols. It was built in the 14th century as part of the defensive walls, beside the route leading towards Kraków. Today the medieval tower is joined to the Classicist town hall, so it is best understood as the Krakow Gate and Town Hall complex rather than as a free-standing gateway.

Gothic gate and town hall

The gate has a square plan and a stone lower section. In a later period, octagonal storeys were added; the upper one is narrower and gives the tower its distinctive outline. In 1842 a new late-Classical town hall was built directly against the medieval gate. The change closed the old passage but combined a defensive structure with the town’s administration. The upper part of the tower was later reconstructed after damage.

What to see nearby

The complex stands at Kazimierza Wielkiego Square in central Wieluń. After seeing the tower, walk towards the surviving sections of the town walls, including the area around Podwale Street and the former defensive complex. The Krakow Gate is a useful starting point for a walk through the historic centre; churches, monasteries and the cellars of the former castle are nearby.

Practical information

The gate and the exterior of the town hall can be viewed from public space, free of charge and without separate fixed visiting hours. Do not assume that the town hall rooms or tower are open to visitors; access may depend on office operations or events. Stone and cobbled surfaces may be uneven.
