Wieluń Jura Trail

The red-marked Wieluń Jura Trail runs from Częstochowa to Wieluń and is usually given as 113 km long (some sources say 112 or 106.5 km). It continues the Eagles' Nests Trail – both start on the Old Market Square in Częstochowa – but has a completely different character: instead of castles there are forests, meadows, small villages, karst features and long stretches along the Warta. It suits walkers looking for a quiet, little-used multi-day route.

History of the trail

It was designed in 1956–1957 by Janusz Brandys and marked out in 1959–1967. The route has been adjusted over time: the Częstochowa section, which once followed Warszawska Street and went through the forest at Jaskrów, now runs along the Warta, away from built-up areas, near the Rodzik and Sołek hills. In Działoszyn the trail now bypasses the town centre, and between Kępowizna and Bieniec it follows an asphalt road instead of a path with two footbridges.

The route

From Częstochowa the trail passes the Mirów Gorge of the Warta to Mstów. It then leaves the valley and crosses Kruszyna and Prusicko to Ważne Młyny, where it rejoins the Warta. Beyond Działoszyn begins the most beautiful section, inside Załęczański Landscape Park. Near Bieniec the trail finally leaves the river and continues through Ruda to Wieluń, ending by the railway stop. The total ascent from Częstochowa is about 700 m – a gentle trail without steep climbs.

Załęczański Landscape Park

The park was established by a resolution of the Sieradz Provincial Council on 5 January 1978; within Łódź Province it covers 13,520 ha, with a further 8,153 ha of buffer zone. It protects the landscape of the Wieluń Upland, including the Załęcze Bend – a great loop of the Warta – and the Działoszyn and Krzeczów gorges. Its sights include the Granatowe Źródła (Navy-Blue Springs): the only pulsating, terraced karst springs in the Polish Jura, where some water emerges from a rock crevice on the bank and some from the bed of a Warta oxbow.

Tripto tips

For most walkers the full 113 km means several days on foot; cyclists will be faster, but some sections follow forest and field tracks. For a shorter trip, choose the stretch through Załęczański Landscape Park between Działoszyn and Bieniec – the most scenic part. Both ends have rail connections, which makes a one-way walk easy to organise. The route passes through small villages, so book accommodation in advance.
