Stary Groń Peak in the Silesian Beskids

Stary Groń (792 m above sea level) rises above the village of Brenna in the Silesian Beskids and is one of the most easily accessible summits of the range. The green trail from Brenna Leśnica takes about an hour to climb, and the way back only half an hour. The reward is an observation tower, a wide summit meadow and a traditional mountain hut where you can rest, eat and even spend the night.

The name Stary Groń refers not only to the summit but to an entire ridge almost 3 km long, branching north-west from Grabowa on the main ridge of the Silesian Beskids. It separates the valleys of Hołcyna and Leśnica. The north-eastern slopes towards Hołcyna are steep and almost entirely forested, while the gentler hillsides above the Leśnica valley are covered with meadows reaching up to the ridge. The hamlets of Grabowa, Pod Stary Groń and Na Tłoczki are scattered across them.

Trails and panorama

Besides the green trail from Brenna Leśnica you can choose a combination of yellow, green and black trails from the same village (about 1 h 20 min), a green route from Brenna Centrum through Horzelica (about 1.5 h) or the black trail from Brenna Ośrodek Zdrowia through Malina (about 2 h). All routes pass a small chapel just below the summit. The tower opens up views over the Silesian Beskids and, in clear weather, distant mountain ranges.

Practical information

The starting point with free parking lies next to the bus stop in Brenna Leśnica, by the Dolina Leśnica recreation centre. On the summit there is an open-access mountain hut with wooden benches, perfect for a picnic in any weather. Stary Groń works well both as a family outing and as a stop on a longer hike along the main ridge.
